Steve Paine and Pat Ward Split Modified Features, Paine Claims Black Rock Title

Rich Vleck, DUNDEE, NY (August 31, 2007)- The night dubbed as “15 Features for $10” lived up to it’s billing, with excitement throughout the night and a wild finish in the 358-Modified Championship Battle on Bully Hill Vineyards and Five Star Bank Night.

Steve Paine captured yet another Black Rock Speedway Title on Friday in the Marbles Automotive 358-Modified Division, but his first in Dundee since 2003.

The Waterloo, NY driver used a win in the 25-lap make-up feature to give him some padding in the points chase, but a flat tire on the first lap of the second feature put the title in question. In the end, however, “The Hurricane” was back into second and once again wearing the crown.

“I got into a car on the start when things sort of jammed up and cut the right rear down, that really put us behind,” said the driver of the familiar No. 7x. “We had a good car, just needed to move our way back through.”

In the first feature, Paine had moved into the race lead by lap 10 and appeared as if he was set on the cruise control the rest of the way, but Pat Ward began to battle for the lead in the closing laps. Ward peaked under Paine coming off of two but could not complete the pass; it was all Paine needed to find out the bottom was the fast line around the track. For the rest of the event Paine checked out for the win.

While Paine and Ward crossed in the top-two spots, Brian Swarthout was third to keep him in the hunt, with Ron Cartwright Jr. hustling back up to sixth after cutting down a right rear tire.

With four drivers still mathematically eligible for the championship entering the second feature, a strong finish was necessary. Ron Cartwright having to start in last after cutting another tire in his heat race put him way behind the 8-ball entering the final point race.

Even though Paine had to stop in the pits, he never lost the unofficial point lead through the race as he steadily progressed forward. After restarting on lap 10 in 15th, Paine was up to third by the time the caution waved on lap 21.

Donnie Lawson jumped out in front early in the feature, but Pat Ward chased down the leader from his 18th place starting position by lap 15. Even though it would take another half-dozen laps to assume the lead, the Genoa, NY driver was able to establish himself as the leader as he was leading when a caution flew on lap 21.

Paine would move up to second, but did not have enough for the No. 42p, which once again parked the small-block in Victory Lane.

“I knew those guys would be battling for the points and I didn’t want to get in the way,” said Ward after taking on a massive field of 28 cars. “I figured the best way to do that was to get out in front early.”

Ron Cartwright Jr. charged hard to cross the finish just behind Lawson in fourth, securing second in the point standings. John Pfeffer scored his first top-five at the track in the No. 22x.

The only win Justin Wright had in the Hoselton Automotive Crate Sportsman before Friday Night came after contact made with Brady Fultz earlier in the season. On Championship Night, he had a chance to celebrate a win and see his buddy pick up the Inaugural Title.

Justin Wright completed a bonsai-pass on Daryl Hilkert for the race lead on lap 15 as he went on to score his fourth career Sportsman Feature, second at BRS. Wright was running fourth before a lap 13 restart but found bite and slung around the rest of the back on the topside to score the win.

“I got a lot of help from Bob Mullen (at East Coast Speed) for this one and I talked to Larry Wight before the feature and they gave me some setup tips,” said Wright, who was able to secure second in the points. “I got to thank them.”

While Wright was running away with the win, Brady Fultz was slowly moving up through the pack, crossing in fifth, which was more than enough to claim the Championship.

“I couldn’t have done this without Tim Sebring and Steve Paine,” said the Dundee Resident. “We’ve been pretty good recently and had a nice lead and I just had to hang onto it.”

Jeremy Wonderling returned to his old form, capturing the first Freedom Village USA Super Stock Feature in dominating fashion. Wonderling moved around Bob Buono early in the event by using the high side and ran away over the balance of the event. Buono and Quinn Sutherland completed the top-three.

In the second feature, Wonderling grabbed the lead with five laps to go, but Bob Buono jumped right back around the No. 3J and hold him off in a thrilling 20-lap event.

Buono won by only a car-length for his third win of the year in his new division. Wonderling held off Jeff Chesebro and Steve Dixon for second, with Mikey Wonderling finishing fifth.

Rich Sharpsteen I stayed hot in make-up features, winning his third in three tries in the Street Stock Divison. Sharpsteen moved around Chris Fisher on the third lap and stayed a comfortable distance in front of Fisher and Frank Chapman to score his sixth win of the season.

Things did not go as well for Sharpsteen in the second feature as his rear axle broke while pressing Larry Fenton Jr. for second and was done for the night.

Point leader Frank Chapman Jr. then jumped in front and seemed destined to cruise to another win but it was Daryl Krebs of Port Byron who was on a tear to score his first career win at Black Rock.

Krebs was one turn away from scoring a win earlier in the year when he spun his No. 13, but on Friday he kept it straight all the way to the checkered flag.

Jared Hill continued his own streak of winning all of the make-up features for the Regional Truck Pro Truck Features, scoring his fifth win of the year and third in a make-up feature.

The second feature saw Chris Leroux score his second career win at Black Rock, holding off the fierce charges of point leader Terry Povoski to win for the first time since early May.

Joe Povoski did all he could in the Black Rock/Woodhull Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder Challenge Finale, winning his second race in a row in the No. 8x, but coming up just short in the challenge points.

Jon Wallenbeck moved around Scott Bradley for second late in the event and scored the Title with the best average finish. In his first start at the speedway this year, Wallenbeck was strong holding off Bradley, Rich Sharpsteen II and Adam Austin.

Povoski stayed strong in the standard feature as he scored his third win in a row in the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinders, holding off challenges from Jack and Chad Ayers, as well as Brett Buono, to pull off the sweep of the night.

Tom Austin Jr. captured the HomeNecessities.com Bandit Championship in fine fashion early in the night, scoring his sixth win of the season and his first in the No. 4JM. Austin passed early race leader Coutney McMinds and cruised to the Victory. McMinds had a career-best second-place finish.

With the win, Austin captured a 28” Toshiba Flat-Screen TV and now sets his sights on the adult divisions in the years to come.

Bill Werner dominated the 4-cylinder enduro, winning the 30-lap event over his brother, Karl, by more than seven seconds.

A solid crowd and not a single cloud were on hand for the final show of the regular season. Over 100 cars were yet again on hand, includable season highest in the modifieds (28), sportsman (19) and trucks (8). With eight lucky fans to opportunity to race in the 4-cylinder enduro cars after just a $5 Charitable Donation. That race was also eventful during the night.
