Stock Car Saturday Night Returns to SSP with Witmer Winning His Third Late Model Feature of the Year; Racing Continues With ARDC Midgets on Sunday Night

Newberrytown, PA (September 1, 2007) – Stock Car Saturday Night at the Susquehanna Speedway Night found Dover’s Bud Witmer picking up his third Late Model win of the season. Middletown ’s Eric Walker picked up his second Street Stock main event of the season. Ray Broderick of Lancaster won his second consecutive Xtreme Stock Car feature. York Haven’s Matt Sowers picked up the XSC Rookie Rumble after Trevor Stark disqualified himself from the event after winning. Smokette Frye also from York Haven won the Women on Wheels Mini Van feature. More than 175 children in attendance had fun competing in the Kid’s Box Car races. Those without boxes competed in a “Boxless” Box Car race.

The 20-lap Late Model feature began with a wild 13-car spin and pile up coming out of turn 4 on the first lap of the initial start when a few cars at the front of the pack got crossed up. Many of the car had minor damage and were able to continue. On the second try for a start, Travis McClelland led the first lap with Josh Knoll grabbing the lead on the next circuit. Knoll led the next eleven laps until Bud Witmer moved by on the 13th lap of the race. Witmer led the rest of the way to win his third race of the year, followed by Jake Jones, John Moser, Jr., Sam Leonard, Jr. and Scott Richwine. Larry Baer came from 21st to finish 6th, with Justin Ehrhart, Steve Weikel, Carl Graves and Charlie Potts rounding out the top ten.

An exciting five driver chase for the 2007 point championship loomed over the 20-lap Street Stock feature event with seven driver with 50 points of each other. The race began with Chad Smith leading early over Steven Dove. On the eighth lap, Eric Walker moved from a seventh place starting position to take the lead from Smith. Walker led to the end winning his second of the season over Paul Morgan who was able to extend his point lead a little over all other rivals. Scott Thunberg finished third, followed by Dustin Hollinger and Chad Smith. Rounding out the top ten were Steven Dove, Todd Bowersox, Craig Morgan, Joe Whiteley and Joey Hoffer.

In the 30-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature, Matt Wampler jumped out to the early lead before Chris Heller overtook him on the 11th circuit. Heller relinquished the lead on a lap 13 yellow with a flat tire. This gave the lead to SSP point leader, Michael Goodwin. Goodwin and Wampler battled side-by-side until Wampler retired from the event with mechanical problems on lap 18. Wampler’s exit move the two Broderick driven cars behind Goodwin. On a lap 27 restart, Ray Broderick got by Goodwin and went on to win the race followed by Goodwin. Sam Rial battled to a third place finish, followed by Donnie Broderick and Larry Landis. Rounding out the top ten were Adam Smith, Bill Fulton, Rich Lomman, John Hiden, Jr. and Les Scrivens, Jr. Goodwin’s second place finish clinched the 2007 SSP Xtreme Stock Car point championship with one race remaining next week. Matt Sowers won the 15-lap XSC Rookie Rumble feature.
