SMITH & DONLINGER TOP BAUDOIN OIL LABOR DAY DUAL
By Bill Nelson
Spring Valley MN
September 1
Finally a picture perfect weekend in Southern Minnesota with a cool breeze and temps in the lower 80s brought a huge crowd and a great field of cars for the third annual Labor Day Dual sponsored by Baudoin Oil of Grand Meadow. On tap for the fans were the World Dirt Racing League Late Models and the United States Modified Touring Series, with both series on the card it was a great night of racing action for the die hard traveling series fans.
With some track prep work completed, driver introductions done on the front stretch the 50-lap WDRL event pulled onto the track. Perfect track conditions saw Justin Fegers jump out to the early lead with Brady Smith in hot pursuit. Denny Eckrich sat in third with Dave Eckrich in fourth. Matt Furman rounded out the top five early on as the rest of the field raced two and three wide for position. As the top two pulled away from the field the Eckrichs raced side by side for third. With ten completed Fegers pulled out to a couple car length advantage while Eric Pember and Adam Hensel worked through the field and into the top ten early on. Fegers and Smith were into lapped traffic with thirteen down and Pember, Hensel and Keith Foss raced three wide for sixth behind Kerry Hanson in fifth. Smith cleared into the lead with sixteen laps completed. Local driver Neil Eckhart worked into the top ten at this time. Denny Eckrich started making up ground on Fegers who was having a little trouble working lapped traffic with twenty one down. The field was still racing all over the track at this time with many two and three wide battles raging on throughout the field. Twenty two down saw the first caution of the event fly. Smith took off on the restart with Fegers in second with Hensel working into fourth as another quick caution flew. On the restart Hanson, Pember and Dave Eckrich had a great battle for the fifth spot. Pember took the position and then ran beside Hensel for three laps before taking over fourth from Hensel. Denny Eckrich took over the second spot from Fegers with ten to go but Smith was way too strong up front and pulled out to an almost half lap lead with Fegers finishing third, Pember and Hensel rounded out the top five.
A light mist was laid on the track as the USMTS modifieds pulled onto the track for their traditional four wide salute to the fans. Bob Timm and Kelly Shryock took the field to the green flag with Shryock taking control of the race early on. Dean Mahlstedt quickly moved under Timm for the second spot. A caution with four down bunched up the field. Shryock led with Timm and Mahlstedt racing for second. Tim Donlinger and Jon Tesch raced for third With eight down another caution slowed the field. On the restart Donlinger and Mahlstedt raced for third while Brad Waits moved into the top five. Donlinger took over third while Timm kept the pressure applied to the race leader up front. Another restart with twenty six to go saw Timm and Donlinger go head to head for second, Tesch and Waits raced for third as the field was still racing three and four wide through the corners. Jason Krohn had charged up through the field to battle Todd Scharkey for sixth after starting seventeenth on the field. Mahlstedt and Waits were still racing hard for fourth as Krohn took over sixth with sixteen to go. Shryock still held onto the lead with Donlinger and Timm racing for second, Waits finally took over fourth with fourteen to go. Donlinger finally cleared Timm and on the next lap moved under Shryock for the lead. With the final ten laps winding down in the books Jason Hughes who started twenty third on the field found the low side to get under Scharkey for the fifth spot. Donlinger held on strong up front and slowly pulled away from Shryock for the win. Shryock came home second, Waits finished third with Timm and Sharkey holding off Hughes for fourth and fifth.
Next week Deer Creek Speedway hosts the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, a racers race with almost $200,000 in prize money to be given away to the USMTS drivers and the WISSOTA Midwest modifieds. Racing action on Thursday and Friday start at 6:00 with the finally starting at 5:00 on Saturday night.
