SCRA’S SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN
It’s crunch time for the Sprint Car Racing Association’s wingless 360 c.i. drivers as they enter the final four rounds of the 16-event season this Saturday night at Kings Speedway in Hanford (CA).
The weather is hot, and the action is expected to be just as hot with the point championship, prize money and pride, up-for-grabs. Australian Peter Murphy (870) holds an 80-point lead over Davey Pombo (790) and a 180-point advantage over Rusty Carlile (690). Jeff Gardner and 2006 defending series champion Jonathan Logan follow with 639 and 577 respectively.
With 80 maximum points available this weekend, some interesting scenarios are a possibility: Murphy and Pombo could end up tired for the lead, Gardner and Logan could flip-flop positions. Sixth through eighth, John Niggli (509), Justyne Hamblin (501) and Richard Harvey Jr. (472) could also change. Ninth-place Myles Bishop (404) could conceivably move up one spot, as could Michael Faccinto (354), one of the hottest drivers on the circuit. Faccinto captured his first-ever 30-lap feature two weeks ago and has recorded four top-five finishes in only six starts.
A host of others are seeking not only to move up the ladder, but to record their initial victory of the year. They include Kevin Barnes, Matt Day, John Iturriria, Dave Knott, Jim Turner, Greg Bragg and rookies Adam Frith-Smith, and twins Jace and Richard VanderWeerd.
The series will continue on September 15, 28th and 29th, all at Kings Speedway. The latter two events are part of the Second Annual Dirt Nationals.
