FASTRAK Late Model Series Heads to Antioch Speedway as points battle closes in.
As the FASTRAK late model competitors leave their first ever $10,000
to win battle in VA, they now head next to the ½ mile facility of
Antioch Speedway in Morganton NC on Saturday, September 15 for
another Southern/Mid- East Region combination event.
The point battle going into Wythe was close as only 3 points
separated the top three contenders of William "Mr. Smooth" Thomas
(22) of Phenix City AL, John "The Wildcat" Llewellyn (90) of
Knoxville TN and David "Bad Boy" McCoy (187) of Franklin NC. Now
things have changed a bit. Not that the points aren't close. Just
that "lightning" Lee Cooper (57) of Greer SC, now has thrown his hat
into the points chase as well. With Thomas breaking at Wythe,
Llewellyn just making the show and McCoy finishing mid pack, Cooper
has made his way into a tie for first place in the Southern Region
along with fellow competitor Llewellyn. Llewellyn won the previous
event at Antioch earlier this year and looks to redeem himself from
the Wythe event.
Cooper 307, Llewellyn 307, Thomas 306 and McCoy 290 hold the top 4
spots in the Southern Region and are only separated by a total of 17
points. Nipper is close behind in 5th but has a tough 88 points to
make up in only a few shows left this year. The Mid East Region
favors Llewellyn a it more but keeping in mind McCoy won the FASTRAK
Winter Nationals earlier this year in Savannah GA, he has one race he
can drop and add his win from the Winter Nationals. That would give
Llewellyn the lead currently with 327, McCoy would have 300, Cooper
292 and Thomas 247. The same top four in both Regions. Chris Chandler
has made his way up the ranks as he is currently 5th with 227 points.
Both Regional Championships pay $5000 to win and pay through 10
positions. This has to be the tightest points battle in the country.
Now only is every finish important but now every lap as well. Thomas
held a commanding lead earlier in the year but bad luck has bit
the "young guns" member and he too is looking to redeem himself at
Antioch.
The event will pay $2000 to win with $200 guaranteed to start the
main. The 40 lap battle should be one of the most amazing ever as
competitors are expected from the surrounding area in an attempt to
size up the competition for the upcoming FASTRAK Grand Nationals
paying a whopping $50,000 to win. This will be one of very few
chances for the competitors to see each other before hand.
FASTRAK has become a crowd favorite continuing to cater to the fans.
Kids Inversion. Top 12 locked in through qualifying then kids are
chosen from the grandstands and brought to the front straight. Each
kid chooses what driver they want to draw a number for and as the
kids draw the top six are inverted accordingly. Each child is given a
trophy compliments of Old 29 Golf Karts.
The driver introductions are then competed on the front straight with
each driver given a tennis ball to be thrown up into the grandstands
as they get back into their cars. The 24 car field then goes into the
four wide in the "salute to the fans" as the fireworks then explode
overhead as the cars pass under.
Then 40 laps of the best dirt late model racing in the country. Who
will leave the points leader?
