Fireball Enduro at Cornwall Motor Speedway

By Martin Bélanger

CORNWALL, On – Sunday September 9, 2007 - It was the annual Fireball Enduro at Cornwall Motor Speedway and again, the pits were full of cars and the stands were packed to come and enjoy a pretty entertaining racing afternoon.

It all started with the 50-lap women’s 4 cylinders feature. This race ran pretty smoothly has only 1 red flag was shown to the field and the ladies gave a pretty good show with 28 cars registered to compete on the slick and wet track. Emily Sloan was the winner after avoiding a few cars that stopped on the track while Katelin Wilson finished second and Chelsey Cholette completed the podium.

The men’s 6 cylinders feature was next on the track with 82 cars that answered the call for this 50-lap race. The track was watered between the two features so that the car could not go fast. The first laps were very entertaining with cars banging together everywhere on the track before the track started to dry up a little. The first red came on the field with 15 laps down for safety reason and over 60 cars were left at this time. The second red came 6 laps later for the same reasons. Only about fifteen cars were left running when the third red occurred with less than 7 laps to go. The #17 car of Pat Pope led the last laps to win the feature race, Cory Winters followed him and Peter Winters finished third.

After the track was cleaned up, the men’s 4 cylinders were brought to the track with a total of 107 cars were at the track for 50 laps of mayhem. Just like the previous race, the first laps were quite amusing with cars getting together and seeing some 5 and 6 wide racing on the speedway when the first red came for. As the race resumed, body pieces continued to fill the track until the second red came with 11 laps down. The field lost many drivers in the first portion of the race as the laps went down when the first rollover of the afternoon occurred with 20 laps down. On the following green, the drivers did 9 more laps when the red came back for a driver who was in bad shape in the backstretch. With less than 20 cars left running the last 20 laps went on as the #46 car of Dave Renaud ran a great race as he won the feature race with Ted Giruan and Mathieu Aubin completing the podium.

The final race of the day consisted of the 50-lap finale for the 8 cylinders type car with 50 of them taking the green flag. Like the other races a lot cars did not survived the first laps. The first 20 laps went on until the first red came on the field for a car on fire in turn 3. The green was back on the speedway with about 15 laps to go, only a dozen cars were left running on the track. With 5 laps to go, the field was cut down to 8 cars and the victory finally going to Norm Dupuis who led almost all the laps in this race with Renaud Ayotte in second and Luke Marti who completed the podium.

This year’s enduro saw a whopping 267 cars registering, to continue the great tradition of Cornwall Motor Speedway. The afternoon was pretty good with Dave Bissonnette of B&L Metals giving the crowd a good show by crushing a car between two features and the crowd was pretty pleased. Next week is the final show of the year at Cornwall with the presentation of a special 40-lap feature race for the sportsman with a lot of cars already registered for this event along with the final race in the stock car challenge with 25 laps to be done for semi-pro. The rookie category will also have a 25-lap race along with a monster demolition derby and a back-up race. What a way to finish the 2007 season and it all starts at 2pm.
