BARGER, MARSDEN, JOHNSTON, RELYEA & KOLENDA WIN SATURDAY AT FULTON SPEEDWAY
FULTON, NY (September 8) – Last Saturday at Fulton Speedway on A-Verdi Storage Containers Night, Justin Barger of Montrose bested a field of 32 ASCS Patriot Sprint Cars for the 25-lap victory on the high banks from the pole position after sweeping the nights events. Also winning were invader Phil Marsden of Mexico in the UMP Street Stocks and track champion Mark Johnston of Syracuse in the 4-Cylinder Enduro 50-lap Victoria Championship event. The popular King’s Smash’em Crash’em Demolition Derby was a draw between Brent Relyea and Bryan Kolenda as both cars were running but locked together at the finish.
Justin Barger was the victor in the ASCS Patriot Sprint Car 25-lap feature event after leading the entire distance that went green to checker. Bobby Breen made a late race charge up into second over Chuck Hebing who finished third. Blake Breen and rookie Scott Kreutter were fourth and fifth respectively. Completing the exciting top ten were Jessica Zemken, Jason Barney, Jeff Cook, Jared Zimbardi, and Don Adamczyk. With his finish, Hebing claimed the 2007 ASCS Patriot Championship and also won the A-Verdi “King of Central New York” title.
“I could really put the car anywhere tonight,” said the driver of the No. 32 who won his heat, the dash, and the feature. “I wasn’t that good at the top of turn one, so I had to run the bottom there but everywhere else it was good. I think I needed a caution to clear out the lapped traffic, but I guess it worked,” commented Barger after the race, where he redeemed himself after a poor showing at the season opener at Fulton, when he was 15th. “We did everything different than we did that night (on May 5) and that helped.”
In the 20-lap North-South Shootout Street Stock feature, track regular Gary Barton and track champion Ron Hawker raced side-by-side for the first three laps before the first yellow of the event flew. Scott Clawson seemed to explode an engine laying down fluid off of turn four and down the front straight ending his night. On the restart Phil Marsden using the extreme outside got by both Barton and Hawker to grab the lead.
Once in the lead Marsden had to be on top of his game as lap after lap Barton was able to stay with the high flying leader. As the race reached the halfway point Barton, using the low side, was able to pull even with Mardsen in the turns. Exiting the turns Barton couldn't get enough momentum to overtake the lead. Ten car lengths back of the two leaders, Hawker, Rusty Marsden and Adam DePuy were waging their own battle for third.
With a handful of laps to go a lapped car came into play for the leaders. As Marsden and Barton came down the front straight they split the lapped car going into one with Barton gaining the lead. With starter Glenn O'Laughlin giving the five-to-go sign Marsden, once again using the top, regained the lead over Barton. On lap sixteen the final yellow of the race would fly, setting up a four lap shoot-out to the finish. After running the top for the whole race Marsden suddenly went to the bottom shutting off any momentum
Barton had. From there Marsden won by a narrow margin. Barton, Hawker, Rusty Marsden and Adam DePuy rounded out the top five. Dan Hoffman, Sr., Mike Welch, Steve Crouse, Steve Woodworth and Quentin Burton completed the top ten.
In victory lane Marsden commented on his battle with Barton. "This is great, that was a lot of fun. That's my old car," Marsden talking about the Barton No.56. "That old dinosaur still runs great doesn't it." Marsden finished up thanking Jeremie Corcoran for the great track surface.
The 4-Cylinder Enduro division had their annual $400 to win, 50-lap Victoria Championship event with Mark Johnston taking the checkers to help celebrate his 2007 track championship. Johnston beat out Les Baker for the win in a close finish. Joe Buske Jr., Jerry Herbert, and Jeremy Kelly completed the top five.
The King’s Smash’em Crash’em Demolition Derby was exciting as ever with nearly 20 cars participating. In the end, two cars were running but hooked together, with derby officials deeming a tie. Brent Relyea and Bryan Kolenda were the winners.
The next event on the Fulton Speedway 2007 race schedule is the 22nd Annual Victoria 200 Weekend September 27-29.
