Whitney Wins Budweiser Northern Nationals; Extends IRA Point Lead
Superior, WI: It takes patience to win a championship and a feature event. Travis Whitney started third and watched Scotty Neitzel put a straightaway lead on him for the first 10 laps of the O'Reilly Bumper to Bumper IRA event at Superior Speedway's Budweiser Northern Nationals. Whitney waited. He waited until traffic held up Neitzel and then sprung into the top spot.
>From there, the defending champion never looked back. Whitney blasted through the lap cars and although Neitzel never faded, the Minnesota veteran was too fleet and stole to his fifth series win of the season. The feature, after four yellow flags on the initial start, went green to checkered on the fourth attempt. Polesitter Bill Balog was third at the finish while John Haeni and Travis Cram, racing at Wisconsin's Superior Speedway for the first time, was fifth.
In qualifying, Rookie of the Year contender Russel Borland took a very hard hit in to the turn two concrete. He was alert and conscious when he was transported to a local hospital for an examination and was scheduled to be released on Saturday morning. Chad Blonde, visiting from Litchfield, Michigan, picked up quick time honors over Scott Uttech and Davey Heskin. Blonde, however, abruptly stopped during the second heat and was scratched for the night. Heat races for the 28 IRA Sprint Cars were won by John Haeni, Bill Balog and Mike Reinke while Kurt Winker scored the B-main. Night number 26 on the O'Reilly Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car schedule is set for Saturday night, September 8, at the Sixth Annual Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin.
