Fultonville, NY- As the second day of the Thunder on the Mountain weekend kicked off there was electricity in the air, and not from the pending weather, from the appearance of the infamous Dover Brake 00 piloted by Bobby Varin for the 50 lap event.
By virtue of their heat race wins, Erik Nelson and Varin would lead the modified field to the green. Varin would quickly jump out to the lead and start to pull away leaving Nelson, Ray Zemken and Robert King to battle for second. Starting deep in the field Flyod Billington, who led the Ridge modified ranks with 5 wins, was on the move. Billington who found the front stretch wall the night before picked his way through to the third spot, pressuring Nelson for second. Billington’s race would come to and end in the turn 3 infield with motor problems. A late race yellow would bunch up the field again placing 2007 Glen Ridge Track Champion Craig Hanson on the back bumper of Nelson. As the green flew the lap car of Jamike Sowle would come into play, holding up Nelson and Hanson as Varin again slipped away. Contact between Sowle, Hanson and Nelson would send Sowle spinning in turn 4, his night ending in the front stretch wall beneath the flag stand. On the restart Varin would again step away, leading wire to wire for the victory. Hanson would get by Nelson for second, followed by Mike Ketchum and Ray Zemkin.
Rob Konikowski would lead the Budget Sportsman field to the green. The Glen Spey, New York native would quickly take command of the race stretching out a commanding lead quickly. His lead would be erased by a Frank Greco spin in turn 3. Greco would be done for the evening. The yellow would place the 26 of “Dangerous” Derrick McGrew on the back bumper of Konikowski. McGrew would take the lead on the restart from Konikowski. McGrews teammate David Constantino would be hot on his heels as he would clear Konikowski to take over the second spot. As the laps would down Constantino could stay with McGrew but could not muster a run at his teammate. McGrew would take the checkers followed by Constantino. Konikowski would hold on for 3rd followed by second generation drivers Jermiah Munson and Angela Hoard.
Despite running a partial season, Dave Bayes had been the car to beat at the Glen Ridge Motorsports part in the 2007 season. Bayes claimed 10 street stock victories, including 5 straight leading into the $1000 to win 50 lap event. By virtue of his heat race victory Bayes would start on the pole with Johnstown, New York’s Rocky Warner along side. Bayes would jump out to the early lead with Warner in tow. Canjoharie’s Justin Knight would be third, pressuring Warner for second. And early yellow flag would send Warner pitside, he would return. On the restart Bayes would continue to lead with Knight pressuring for the top spot. The car on the move would Rob VanAernam. Starting last in his #71 VanAernam picked his way meticulously through the field to the 3rd spot pressuring Knight for second. As the laps wore down VanAernam would take 2nd and set sail after Bayes. Rocky Warner was hot on his trail after reverting to the back of the field. Warner would come up to pressure Knight for 3rd. At the end of the race there was no catching Bayes as he claimed the victory, his 11th of the season, and 6th in a row. VanAernam would be second with Warner nipping out Knight by a fender for third. Warren Pollack would round out the top 5 followed by Cliff Haslun, Brandon Emigh, Cody Bleau, Ellis Shaffer and Darrell Older.
In the cruiser feature Laurie Fallas and Jamie Warner would quickly take over the top spots and stretch out a large lead. Kerry Hollenbeck who picked up the previous nights victory would make his way to third and try to chase down the top 2. A flat tire would side line his efforts, he would change the tire but would return several laps down and out of contention. Up front Fallis and Warner would do battle with Warner edging into the top spot. Fallis would keep the pressure on but Warner would hold on to take the victory. Fallis would be second followed by Len St. Andrews, Erica Nelson, and Pat McSpirit.
