ARNOLD AND KROHN TOP NIGHT 1 OF FEATHERLITE FALL JAMBOREE
By Bill Nelson
September 6, 2007
Spring Valley MN
After the completion of racing action last year during the 8th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree held at Deer Creek Speedway the Queensland Family and the USMTS announced they were looking for a new date to hold the 9th annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree. During the off-season the date was set for the 6th, 7th and 8th of September a full two weeks earlier than previously used. The question was would that date pay off, and with a resounding yes the cars and fans turned out in huge numbers all week.
After the heat racing action was completed some track maintenance was performed during which time some promotional activities were held. Over the years Dirt Doctor Trucking and Mike’s Hard Lemonade have worked together on a couple promotions and the ones that have stuck it out through the years are the t-shirt guns shooting t-shirts into the crowd and the lemon toss. If you haven’t seen the lemon toss it is a favorite, with one lemon being handed to a member in each section of the crowd. When the dirt doctor trucking dump truck drives by on the track then they attempt to throw the lemon into the bed of the truck. If they succeed each member of that section (over 21) with a reserved seat gets a free Mike’s of their choice. This event will be performed each night of the Jamboree. Also bicycle giveways from Mike’s Hard Lemonade are held. Featherlite and other sponsors step up with ton’s of giveaways and few people leave without a Frisbee, can coolie, hat, shirt or other item throughout the three night show.
The first feature race of the event was the $200 to win Amsoil Dirt Track Series WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Dirt Doctor trucking stepped up with some added bonus’s for this class as 5 competitors would receive an extra $100.00 based on a drawing of finishing spots as done by a lucky fan. Forty four WISSOTA Midwest Modfiieds checked into the gate for the first night. The drivers pulled onto the track without knowledge of what spots would get the extra bonus and took the green flag. With a very heavy track on Thursday night the drivers stayed side by side for the first lap until Jimmie Arnold took the early lead, Joel Alberts took over second with Brandon Davis and Bryan Hernandez racing for third. Hernandez took over third with two down. Kenny Wytaske now sat in fifth and worked on Hernandez and Davis for third as they kept swapping spots with five down. Although they were racing hard side by side Hernandez and Davis gained on Alberts and went three wide for second with twelve to go. Herandez took over second with Wytaske following him through into third. A restart with ten to go saw the field bunched back up. On the restart Herandez and Alberts now raced for second with Hernandez up against the cushion and Alberts around the bottom. With eight to go Wytaske again moved past Alberts for third and started putting pressure on Hernandez for second. They moved side by side on the next lap with Wytaske eventually taking the spot. Chris Adams moved up with Davis to race with Hernandez for the third spot late in the race. Hernandez held onto the second spot behind Arnold while Adams and Davis rounded out the top four. Finishing in fifth on the night was Jerry Young who started twenty third on the grid and charged his way to the fifth palce finish. Wytaske was running in second on the last lap and went to make a pass for the win but lost the handle on his machine spinning into the infield in turn four. He kept the power on and pulled back onto the track to finish sixth.
The next feature to start was the $2,000 to win 30 car 35 lap USMTS event. During qualifying action 114 cars took to the track for racing action. With introductions waved due to impending rain the drivers took to the track running two and three wide for the first lap. Dean Mahlstedt was credited with leading the first lap with Willy Kraft close in second. Kraft pushed up slightly with Jason Krohn, Mark Noble and Jon Tesch all in a tight battle for third. With three down Noble took over second while Krohn and Kraft raced for third. Noble now pushed up in the corner allowing Krohn to take over second as Tesch and Kraft now battled for position. Behind them Dan Bohr and Brad Waits were side by side on Nobles bumper as they raced for sixth. With twenty six to go Krohn took over the top spot Tesch moved into third behind Mahlstedt. Two laps later Bohr got squirrelly, allowing the top four to pull away as the rest of the field tightened up. Tesch was gaining on Mahlstedt while Jason Huges worked into the top five after starting sixteenth. Krohn now had to start working lapped traffic with fourteen to go as Tim Donlinger now raced Noble for sixth. Krohn and Tesch were pulling away from the field as they sliced through traffic. With ten laps left Hughes worked inot third and was starting to gain on Tesch for second, Mahlstedt now had his hands full for fourth as Donlinger, Waits and Kraft were in a tight group on his bumper. A caution waved as the field was coming to take the white as Mike Sorensen lost the handle of his machine and collected the leader Krohn, Krohn kept on the gas through the infield to keep his position as the yellow waved. A two lap dash saw Krohn leading Tesch, Hughes, Mahlstedt and Donlinger to the green. On the start Mahlstedt and Kraft piled hard into the turn two wall collecting four others in the process. Krohn again led the field on the restart and to the checkers with Tesch second, Hughes third, Waits in fourth and Donlinger fifth.
