Empire Super Sprint Stars set to take Home the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals Crown once Again.
SYARCUSE, N.Y. Almost exactly one year ago, Empire Super Sprint (ESS) star and Quebec native Steve Poirier flashed under the checkered flag at the Ohsweken Speedway to win the second annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. Poirier, who currently leads the ESS points, along with a dozen other top chauffeurs from the sanctioning body celebrating 25 years of sprint car action will be ready for the third annual event in hopes of keeping the championship trophy under the ESS banner.
Poirier took home over $6,000 as he bested Jason Barney for the popular win at the event which is growing to be one of the largest 360 sprint car events in the United States and Canada. More than 70 sprint cars will again be expected and along with Poirier, ESS stars such as Jeff VanDusen, Lance Yonge (who finished second and third to legendary Kenny Jacobs in the first event), defending ESS champ Alain Bergeron, Jeff Cook, Michael Parent, Tommy Wickham, Mike Stelter, Bubby Kerrick, Justin Barger Doug Emery and Jessica Zemken will be on hand looking to the pot of gold that has grown to $7,000 this year.
While the ESS contingent is looking to keep the bragging rights, the work will be cut out for them as top wingman in the pits will include three-time ESS A-Main winner Chuck Hebing, Dustin Daggett, Jared Zimbardi, Tim Allison, track owner Glenn Styres, Kyle Patrick, Rick Wilson, Mike Dussel, The Breen Bros. of Blake and Bobby, Bryan Howland and many, many more.
Friday will be highlighted by twin 15 A-Mains where the winners will pick up $500 and also be guaranteed starters in the Saturday Nationals if they dont qualify. Also on the special Friday card will be the first Mr. Sprint Car Dave Macleod Challenge along with the annual Village Pizza Shootout. ESS teams qualified for the Challenge will be Poirier, VanDusen and Yonge (the top three in points) as they go in a special two on two format that can pay up to a total of $1,000. They will be joined by the top point getters from the Southern Ontario Sprints, National Racing Alliance, and the ASCS sanctioned Patriot Region and Sprints on Dirt. VanDusen, Barger and Yonge will be running the Shootout which pays $500 to win for the 10 lap event which also sees the top finishers from each sanctions point shows held at Ohsweken during the 2007 season.
Saturday will be kicked off by time-trails followed by heat races, multiple B-Mains all leading up to the 30 lap A-Main which pays $7,000 to win, $1,000 for tenth and $600 to take the green flag.
