(Woodhull, NY) Curt VanPelt and Lyle Sherwood were very close friends. Lyle Sherwood wrenched Curt VanPelt to a Mr. Dirt Small Block Championship some 20 years ago. When Sherwood began his driving career he along with both of the VanPelt Brothers were fierce competitors, so it goes without saying that when Lyle Sherwood lost his live to a heart attack at the Woodhull Raceway in June of 2005 it left a huge void in the competition at the popular Steuben County oval. Curt VanPelt showed that he can still wheel a 358 Modified as the veteran Elm Valley, NY speedster had one of his best seasons ever at the Woodhull Raceway as he not only clinched the track title, but also etched his name in to the record books as being the first repeat winner of the Lyle Sherwood Memorial as he beat a stellar field of some of the toughest 358 Modified pilots in the northeast. Twenty-eight machines powered their way to the opening green flag and by virtue of a qualifying heat race win and a good redraw, Curt V. was able to move quickly form his fifth starting position to the top spot by lap six of the thirty-five lap feature event. With a wide, tacky race track the event went unscathed for the first sixteen laps and after a couple of quick yellow flags for one minor spin, one flat tire and a three car spin in turn two the event was virtually flawless. In his cruise to victory lane VanPelt did have some anxious moments in lap traffic as second place runner, Dylan Dewert was able to close on the rear bumper of the Ted White Racing machine of Curt V. but could never really muster a challenge. With the third and final three yellow flags flying on lap twenty-six it did allow Dewert one final shot at “Captain Quick”, but his bid fell short and with that an opportunity to win on the night that his personally owned company, Dewert Speed was sponsoring. Behind Dewert it was a hotly contested battle throughout the remainder of the field and with virtually every car still on the track there were no less than a dozen side by side battles for position. Billy VanPelt was able to move through the field quickly into the top three, but was never able to mount a challenge on either Dewert or older brother Curt and the two time T3 All Star Series Champion had to settle for third followed by pole sitter, Ray Bliss Jr. and Steve Hartman Sr. None the less it was a good point paying night for Dewert, Billy V. and Ray Bliss who all follow the entire series. Likewise, Dale Welty and Bryan Terwilliger, who finished sixth and seventh respectively and who are also tour regulars had good nights as well. Stacy Jackson, who was a winner of consolation event number two, put on a fine drive for eighth chased there by Brian Swarthout and Roger Williams who received the Addison Farm Supply sponsored Hard Charger Award for passing some seventeen cars. Williams was added as a track provisional because of his top five standing in track points and took full advantage of the opportunity by putting on the drive of the night.
By virtue of his second place finish Dylan Dewert has taken over the point lead over Bliss and Billy Vanpelt, however there are still six events left on the 2007 T3 All Star Series of events with the next stop coming on Saturday, September 22 at the Little Valley Speedway located at the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds in Little Valley, NY. Last years event was lost to rain, however Curt VanPelt will be back to defend his 2005 T3 All Star Series for 358 Modifieds win at L.V.
