Corriveau, Gregory and Russell winners at Cornwall Motor Speedway

By Martin Bélanger

CORNWALL, On – Sunday September 16, 2007 – It was the last race program of the season at Cornwall Motor Speedway with the presentation of a special 40-lap race for the sportsmans making an appearance after a 10-year absence, 25 laps for the semi-pro counting for the Stock Car Challenge, 25 laps for rookies, a backward race and to finish the afternoon off, a huge demolition derby.

After a decade off from Cornwall, the sportsman was on the track for a 40-lap feature race. 25 cars took the green with Daniel Messier grabbed the early lead over Jonathan Archambault with JF Corriveau using the outside lane to pass Archambault and was now in second when JF Tessier and Alain Léveillé got together on lap 6. Messier stayed in front on the restart with Corriveau following closely when he used the outside lane to pass Messier on lap 9 when Tessier stopped in turn 2 with 12 laps completed. Corriveau got a good start with Steve Bernier passing Messier when the race resumed. A big crash on the backstretch involving 3 cars with Yan Larrivée landing on his roof and this caused a red flag with all drivers ok in this accident on lap 18. When the race was back on green, Corriveau was still the leader with Messier in second when Denis Forgues spun out in turn 2 on lap 22. Corriveau kept this lead with Nadeau challenging Messier for second spot with Corriveau pulling away when Steve Bernier stopped on lap 26. With the green back on the field, Corriveau got away from Messier with Nadeau in third with good battles going on in the field when Philippe Desgranges stopped in the inside of turn 3 with 33 laps down. Corriveau got another good start with Messier and Nadeau battling for second with Nadeau now in second. Nadeau was closing in on Corriveau with 2 laps to go. Corriveau was able to hold off Nadeau to win this special feature, with Daniel Messier finishing third, Jacques Pelletier was fourth and Jean-François Tessier rounding out the top 5. Jean Boissonneault, Steve Nadeau, Steve Bernier and Yves Léveillé won the qualifiying heats with Sébastien Benoit winning the consolation race.

A nice field of 21 cars started the 25-lap stock car challenge feature for the semi-pro as Jocelyn Roy took the lead after starting second when a couple of cars came together in the backstretch with 2 laps down. Roy got a good start over Gregory when Levac lost control in turn 4 and got hit by a few cars and this brought the yellow on lap 3. Roy kept his spot over Gregory and Ron Wadforth and he got a good lead over them with 10 laps completed. Some debris on the track slowed the field down on lap 13. Roy got another got start but Gregory was right on his tail and was able to pass him in the final turn after a small push. Roy finished second, Ron Wadforth was third, Brian Cross was fourth and Stéphane Lemire finished fifth. Gregory, Roy and Bruno Cyr were the heat winners.

The 25-lap feature rookie feature started 21 cars as Jacques Boisclair took the early lead when an accident occurred in turn 4 involving a few cars after one lap were completed. On the restart, Boisclair stayed first with Bob Ray and Gerry ‘O’ following him. The yellow came back out on lap 5 for David Seguin that hit the wall on the backstretch. Boisclair had a good start on the green with Andrew Russell and Jean-Marc Larose now following him and that is when Kevin Dejong had problems with his car in the backstretch. Boisclair started in front when Russell was able to pass him when Larose pushed Boisclair and the race was stopped for Martin Bigras who had problems with his car on lap 12. Russell got a good jump over Ray, and got a good lead and led the final 13 laps to win the feature race over Gerry ‘O’ and Corey Wheeler, Eli Gilbert finished fourth and Jean-Marc Larose completed the top 5. Jacques Boisclair, Bob Ray and Corey Wheeler had won the heats.

A good car-count showed up for today’s racing afternoon. With race day conditions, the track was pretty slick and the racing was pretty good. Two very entertaining demolition derbies, that finishes off this afternoon’s race program. We would like to thank the fans, sponsors and all drivers for another great season at Cornwall Motor Speedway. See you in 2008!!!
