Jim McCaffrey, Randall Paxton, Denny Decker, Michael Kisor, and Dan Woods Win on Opening Night of King of the Can Weekend

Posted by Tom Ames  |  09/17/07

The two day “King of the Can” Weekend at the Penn Can Speedway opened
on
Saturday night with a big five division racing card, sponsored by Don‘s
Automotive Mall of Binghamton, NY. The Capitol Region Sprint
Association
(CRSA) Sprint Cars were on hand for their third Penn Can Speedway
appearance and Jim McCaffrey drove to his first career feature win in
their 25 lap feature. The BRC Lazer Challenge Series for Late Models
saw
Randall Paxton pick up his second consecutive feature win while three
time defending Penn Can Speedway champion Denny Decker closed out the
Super Stock season with a win in the Trackside Products Super Stock
Tour
event. Michael Kiser topped the Central New York Mini Sprint feature
while Dan Wood capped the inaugural Four Cylinder stock nationals.
The 25 lap CRSA Sprint Car feature saw a new face in victory lane as
Jim
McCaffrey drove to his first career feature win. McCaffrey, a veteran
of
15 years of racing in the Empire State, had never won a feature until
Saturday night as he topped the CSRA field to score his first feature
win. Jeff VanSteenburg led the early laps of the event before McCaffrey
was able to slip past during the middle stages of the event to take
over
the top spot.
The second half of the event featured a tight three car battle between
McCaffrey, VanSteenburg, and a hard charging Tyler Rice. As McCaffrey
continued to lead the event, Rice was on a charge. Rice was able to
close
right in on McCaffrey and VanSteenburg, but has charge for the victory
would be thwarted by a pair of spins in the second turn as he tried to
make a move on the leaders. On both occasions, Rice was able to spin
the
car completely around and continue on his way, losing only a single
position each time. At the finish, it was McCaffrey just managing to
hold
off a fast closing Rice to pick up the victory. Rice overcame his two
spins to finish second with VanSteenburg finishing third. Gordy Button
and Billy Jaycox completed the top five finishers. Tim Damiani, Danny
Hagen, Jeremy Quick, Chuck Alessi, and Jeff Fraiser completed the top
ten.
The “Topless 25” for the Late Model divisin saw Randall Paxton drive to
his second consecutive feature win at Penn Can. The Topless 25, a part
of
the BRC Lazer Challenge Series, featured a side by side battle for the
victory between eventual winner Paxton and newly crowned track champion
Dave Zona. With his championship winning car sold, Zona picked up the
ride in the Bud Phillips #23 for the evening. Eventual winner Paxton
and
Zona put on a show of side by side racing for the Penn can fans as the
two raced several laps side by side as they battled for the lead and
the
victory. Paxton was able to complete the winning pass just four laps
from
the checkered flag to earn the win in a crowd pleasing feature. Zona
drove a great race in an unfamiliar car to finish second with Allen Coy
finishing third in his first start of 2007. Mike Decker and Dan Snyder
completed the to five finishers. Jamie Griffiths finished sixth while
Brett Spoor picked up the ride in the Dan stone #21D and drove to a
seventh place finish. Chad Hollenbeck finished eighth ahead of rookie
Curt Tunello Jr. and Jim O’Hara.
Denny Decker continued his domination of the Super Stock division as he
drove to his 14th victory of the 2007 season at Penn Can, topping the
25
lap Trackside Products Super Stock Tour feature. The Afton, Ny veteran
worked past early race leader Chris Strohl just past the halfway point
and led the remainder of the event to pick up the win. Strohl, behind
the
wheel of his brother Paul’s Super Stock machine for this event, drove
to
a runner-up finish ahead of Jason Rhodes, Doug Polhamus, and Chris
Piasecki. Chad Stone and Rich Green entered their Pure Stock cars in
the
Super stock event and finished sixth and seventh respectively. Fred
Chris, Craing Decker, and Neil Palladino completed the top ten
finishers.
Michael Kiser held off a late charge from Don Harvey Jr. to pick up the
$1,000 to win Central New York Mini Sprint feature. A hard front
stretch
crash involving Jimmy Broderick and Jerry Sehn Jr. set up a two lap
dash
to the finish between Kiser and Harvey. Harvey pressured Kiser all the
way, but was not able to find a way past as Kiser was able to hold off
Harvey for the win. Harvey’s runner-up finish was enough to earn him
the
2007 Central New York Mini Sprint championship. Art Kiser Jr. finished
fourth ahead of former DIRT Modified racer Scott Goodrich while Tim
Durland rounded out the top five finishers. Ralph Utter Jr. scored a
sixth place finish ahead of Ricky Donovan, Denny Lemke, Sierra Lister,
and Matt Norrie.
Dan Wood drove to victory in the 35 lap Four Cylinder Stock Nationals,
picking up the $500 winner’s share of the purse. For most of the event,
Wood was involved in a battle for the top spot with John Hoover, who
led
the majority of the event with Wood just behind. Wood inherited the
lead
with two laps remaining in the event as Hoover suddenly pulled to the
infield with motor problems. Wood led the final two laps to score the
victory over Nick Grist and Gary Kinne. Dave Simms and Jeremy Holt
completed the top five. Pat Murray, Josh Wilder, Larry Spencer, Jeff
Hayes, and “Beezer” completed the top ten.
