Triple 50 Wins By Decker, Hearn & Tomkins Wrap Up 21st Rolling Wheels
Weekend
Elbridge, NY – September 22, 2007 – Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super
DIRTcar Series PR Director
The 21st edition of World Series of DIRT Track Racing Weekend at Rolling Wheels
Raceway Park offered three times the excitement as Billy Decker, Brett Hearn and Gary
Tomkins reached the winner’s circle after scoring convincing victories in the Advance
Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Budweiser Triple 50s on Saturday night. It was
Decker’s fourth tour win of the 2007 campaign, a tour-high seventh for Hearn and a
third this season for Tomkins all at Rolling Wheels.
Starting third on the 30-car grid aboard the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-
Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell entry, Decker took advantage of a lap 17
caution and out-dragged Ryan Phelps on the ensuing restart to make the final lead
exchange before cruising on to a decisive victory in the Paine Motorsports 50. Polesitter
Vic Coffey crossed the line second ahead of Jimmy Phelps, Tim Fuller and Hearn
to kick off the unique tripleheader for tour travelers.
“No question about it, this win is big,” said Decker, 42, after opening up the Advance
Auto Parts Series tripleheader with a return trip to Rolling Wheels’ checkered board
square after capturing the track season-opener in May. His ninth career Big-Block win
at the ‘Fast Track’ was his fifth in Series competition and brought his career tour total to
39. “The guys fourth (points) on back had some bad luck this year. It’s a real battle right
now, we’re just putting our best foot forward in every race. We need to go to every
event to win because its certainly not going to get handed to you.”
Coffey was 14th fastest in Integra Shocks Time Trials yet was good enough to finish
second in his heat and even luckier to select the pole to start the first 50-lapper. The
Leicester, N.Y. chauffeur paced the 30-car starting field until his front row partner Ryan
Phelps swept around the high side as the lead duo crossed the line to complete lap
four. Decker began inside row two and chased the leaders before grabbing second
from Coffey on lap 14.
Qualifying for his first-ever Advance Auto Parts Series event, Pennsylvanian Eric
Palmer slowed at the turn one pit entrance to force out the initial yellow flag on lap 17
and that was all Decker needed to take over the number one position on the ensuing
restart. Heat two winner Hearn was seemingly just as quick, charging from his 10th-
place start into the runner-up spot on lap 18 with Coffey, Jimmy Phelps and cousin
Ryan Phelps filled out the front-five at the halfway mark.
Coffey regained second on lap 29 just before Tomkins stopped as the fuel pump quit on
his Modified mount to incur a second caution period the following circuit. Back under
green flag conditions, Decker wasted little time re-establishing his dominance with
nearly a straightaway advantage over Coffey built up by lap 35, the same time Tim
Fuller cracked the top-five for the first time.
With Decker comfortably out front, the battle raged on further back with Jimmy Phelps
ducking below Hearn for third on lap 46 and Fuller mirroring the move under the “Jet”
on the final circuit. A top-10 runner throughout the feature, Danny Johnson broke on the
last lap to put the Rochester , N.Y. runner 11th on the scoresheet and the first driver one
lap down.
“The car was great, we didn’t fire too good at the start, it took about 5-8 laps to get
going, but once it got there it just kept getting better and better,” added Decker, who
drew 11 to invert the top-11 finishers to start the second 50-lapper. “I hope by the stop
watch we were good because I don’t know what we can do to make the car much
better. But I don’t think you can sit still too long, the other guys are going to make some
changes and if they happen to hit it right it will be some tough sledding. I think we’ll
tweak on ours, nothing major, just some small subtle changes to see if we can enhance
it a little bit.”
Hearn charged from seventh in round two and used a lapped car to pick and roll around
leader Pat Ward on lap 14 en route to his Advance Auto Parts Series-best seventh
victory of the season in the Finger Lakes Radio 50. Hearn posted his all-time high 98th
career tour triumph despite his Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-
Kruger/TEO machine suffering a broken shock mount with Coffey, Jimmy Phelps, Fuller
and Tomkins filling out the final front-five.
“The way we ran in the first race we faded pretty good and I was concerned that we just
didn’t have it tonight,” divulged Hearn, who garnered his first Advance Auto Parts Series
victory of 2007 in July at Rolling Wheels. “We made some adjustments there at the
break which really helped. But right now on that cool down lap we just broke a shock
mount on the rear of the car so we have to go back and do some welding on this thing
pretty quick.”
The feature race inversion put 11th-place finisher Dale Planck on the pole alongside
Integra Shocks Fast Timer Steve Paine with all 30 starters able to return for the second
50-lapper. Paine out-dragged Planck on the opening circuit before Sean Beardsley
stopped in turn two after scraping the frontstretch wall to require the first of five yellow
flags. Following some fierce four-wide action, Pat Ward moved to the point just as the
second caution period arrived as Bill Dunn (turn 4) and Dave Rauscher (turn 1)
exhibited early trouble in the corners.
With five laps complete, Hearn had blasted into second-place and needed less than 10
more times around the slick 5/8-miler to wrestle away the top spot from Ward on lap 14.
The lead duo had come up on the back of newcomer Eric Palmer at the end of the front
chute with Hearn sweeping high around the lapped car while Ward got stuck low
navigating through turns one and two. With 15 laps scored it was Hearn and Ward way
ahead of Paine, Ryan Phelps and Coffey while last place starter Dale Planck had sped
through the pack to secure 15th-place in the early stages.
Holding on to sixth and gradually making his way forward on the grid, any chance of
repeating for round one winner Decker came to an abrupt halt as the big red machine
suffered a broken axle to require a third slowdown on lap 21. At the halfway point Hearn
and Ward continued their march up front, with Coffey, Fuller and Jimmy Phelps taking
over top-five slots followed by Ryan Phelps and 25th-place starter Tomkins.
Ward lost second when a left front tire went down on lap 41 enabling Jimmy Phelps to
improve to third at the finish with fourth-place once again saved for Fuller. Only the final
checkered flag could put an end to Tomkins’ rally as he settled into fifth-place at the
line.
“I haven’t had the chance to talk with anybody yet so I don’t really know if we were all
that good or just good enough,” accessed Hearn, following his DIRTcar best 14th Big-
Block Modified feature win of the season. Seven have been registered in the premier
Advance Auto Parts Series since July. “I have an idea on what to do as far as tire
stagger goes, though. I think we made some pretty big gains there so we’ll just try to get
back and do more of the same.”
After Hearn drew eight to invert the top four rows, fourth-place starter Tomkins waited
patiently in the nightcap before sprinting past pole-sitter Justin Haers on a lap 24 restart
and holding off Ryan Phelps to capture the Owasco Beverages 50-lap finale. Chasing
Tomkins’ no. 84 Honeoye Auto Parts-Red Parker & Son Excavating/Bicknell mount
across the line were Ryan Phelps, Jimmy Phelps, Fuller and Bert Hard Charger Billy
Decker.
“For some reason we found a set-up that I like at this track,” said Tomkins, 41, who
stands 11th all-time following his 15th career Advance Auto Parts Series win, his sixth
taken at Rolling Wheels. “Tonight it was a little rough because we had a problem (fuel
pump) in the first race so we had to start in the back the second time out. We were
really good in the second race, we weren’t going to win but we were definitely a top-five
car and that’s where we finished. We made just a little more adjustment to her and
man, she was a rocket!”
Haers jumped out to the early lead as 28 cars reported to the starting line with Pat
O’Brien and Chad Phelps the only drivers failing to run three straight Modified mains.
Making a return to the tour after a couple months off, Kenny Stafford came to a stop in
turn four to bring out the first yellow flag on lap three. Tomkins had already tracked
down Haers before Russ Hefti slipped high off the back chute to force a second
slowdown four laps later, with Hearn, Jimmy and Ryan Phelps running in the top-five.
The order remained intact until Hearn suddenly parked his mount in turn four as a
driveshaft expired with 23 laps showing on the scoreboard. The restart was just what
Tomkins needed as he out-sprinted Haers down the long front straightaway and
emerged the new leader with 24 laps complete.
With Tomkins uncontested up front, the spotlight was thrust on young gun Ryan Phelps
further back as he sped by Jimmy Phelps on lap 28 and kept up the momentum to
dispose of runner-up Hears the following circuit. Eric Palmer looped Nick Noll’s no. 6n
Grower’s Garden Center Spl. all alone between turns three and four to force starter
Chip Burdick to throw the fourth and final yellow flag on lap 40 with 19 cars still
contending on the lead lap. During the remaining 10 circuits, Jimmy Phelps and Fuller
improved to finish third and fourth for the third straight race while Decker added his
second front-five finish on the day.
“I was just trying to take my time at the end,” said 2004 overall Mr. DIRTcar Modified
Champion Tomkins. “Justin was really good and I wasn’t sure right before the last
caution came out when he was leading if I was gonna get him or not. I took off on the
restart and stayed with him getting out of turn four and I figured as long as I can stay
even with him in the corners we were going to be pretty good.”
“After that I just tried to keep the car straight, not slide around, but if I would’ve seen
somebody’s nose I might’ve pushed a little harder. I was really trying to take it easy,
make sure I got off the corners straight and as long as I did that we were in pretty good
shape. I would’ve had to see Ryan to do something about it. A big thanks goes out to
the crew, this was a bare chassis last Sunday and we also rebuilt the motor (Mastin)
this week. It takes a team effort and we’ve got a really great team,” Tomkins added.
Runner-up Ryan Phelps was obviously happy, if not surprised, to reach the podium
after recording his highest finish on the Advance Auto Parts Series. “We usually run like
crap in these events but the last month has been really good, I definitely wasn’t
expecting this,” admitted Phelps, 23, who joined Fuller, Coffey, Haers and his cousin
Jimmy Phelps among the handful of drivers to post all top-10 finishes in Saturday’s
Triple 50s. “But Its still nice for everybody on the team to finish second.”
“Lately we’ve just found a few basic set-ups that work and we’re going off that, just
tweaking things here and there. We began the year with a lot of trial and error, mostly
error, and lately we’ve been getting things going. It was really interesting tonight as we
changed the car so much for each race you’d think that in one of them we’d be just
awful. Right now we’re just able to figure out what changes need to be made to get the
car better and its working,” Phelps noted.
Fresh off first and third-place finishes in the Advance Auto Parts Series Twin 50s at
Rolling Wheels on Labor Day, Jimmy Phelps continues to be the standard of
consistency after logging his third consecutive third-place finish at The Wheels on the
same day. “The guys gave me a great car, we were hoping to get a win but I’m really
happy for everyone involved with this deal after our success today,” said Phelps, 32,
who ranks fourth in Series points behind only past Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block champions
Fuller, Hearn and Decker. “The program has come a long way in the last few months as
far as picking up consistency and keeping the car towards the front. I can’t thank the
guys enough for letting me be a part of this whole thing.”
“If you’re gonna decide when to be good, now’s the time. We’re happy to come home
third and also get the track championship. In the last race it felt like the car was better
early so we have some work to do figuring out why it went away. We’re still decent, its
just that we want to get things a little better in time for the last couple point races,”
Phelps added.
As all three Triple 50 race winners already earned guaranteed starting berths in the
prestigious Rite Aid 200 Championship race on Oct. 7 of Super DIRT Week XXXVI at
the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse , Ryan Phelps, Chuck Bower and Kevin
Bates collected preferred status in DIRTcar NorthEast’s biggest event of the year.
With Fuller (3,172), Hearn (3,140) and Decker (3,090) putting forth their best bid to pull away
from the pack in the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar/Advance Auto Parts
Super DIRTcar Series point standings, Phelps (2,923) and Steve Paine (2,837) remain among
the top-five heading into Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse for
the 36th Annual Rite 200 Championship on Sunday, October 7.

SKIDMARKS
2007 Tour Travelers: For the third straight year tour officials once again signed up the
best Big-Block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto
Parts Super DIRTcar Series show. The star-studded group of drivers accepting contract
extensions are reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king and winningest Big-Block Modified
driver Alan Johnson, current Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series points leader
Tim Fuller, all-time DIRTcar Modified win leader Brett Hearn, five-time DIRTcar
NorthEast Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, ‘04 Mr. DIRTcar titlist Gary Tomkins,
recently crowned Cayuga County & Fulton points king Jimmy Phelps, Canandaigua
Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, New Egypt Speedway points champion Matt
Sheppard, full-time tour follower Dale Planck, Keystone State open-wheel veteran
Frank Cozze, four-time Super DIRT Week Rite Aid 200 champion Billy Decker and
Central New York talent Justin Hears.
Double DIRT Duty: Nearly half the number of DIRTcar Big-Block drivers also
competed the day before in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series event at Rolling
Wheels, with contracted drivers Jimmy Phelps (4th), Danny Johnson (7th), Steve Paine
(8th), Alan Johnson (19th), Billy Decker (22nd), Brett Hearn (23rd) and Matt Sheppard
(27th) headlining the all-star field. Joining that elite group both days were Russ Hefti,
Pat O’Brien, Jeff Isabell, Pierre Dagenais, Tom Juhl, Kevin Bates, Pat Ward, Dave
Rauscher and brothers Randy and Roger Chrysler. All but Isabell, Dagenais, Juhl and
Roger Chrysler qualified for the Triple 50s on Saturday.
39th RWR Finale: The final weekend of open-wheel action at Rolling Wheels Raceway
is slated for Oct. 5 & 6 during the 36th Annual Super DIRT Week festivities. A 358-
Modified/Sportsman Mr. DIRTcar Series twin-bill leads off on Friday while the 12th
Annual $15,000 Sprint Challenge featuring one of the best sprint car fields ever
assembled in Central New York takes center stage on Saturday. Both open-wheel
programs start at 7 p.m.
Pot Holes: Pierre Dagenais had a difficult time driving on Saturday. Not only was the
Frenchman attempting to qualify in the recently purchased no. 9 Bicknell car from Bob
McCreadie, the personable pilot from Gatineau, Quebec was nursing a possible sprain
in his left wrist. While balancing on a tire as he worked inside his two-story hauler on
Friday night, Dagenais took a hard fall and suffered swelling in his left hand which did
little to subside by the start of the show at Rolling Wheels on Saturday. While the
driving career of ‘Barefoot’ has all but come to an end, his dedicated crew was pitside
during the weekend helping Dagenais dial in his newest ride. Dagenais plans to enter
the car in the ‘Win And You’re In Twins’ at Cayuga County Fair Speedway during Super
DIRT Week in October…..It was rare for Gary Tomkins to miss an Advance Auto Parts
Series event, but motor problems throughout the season forced the Clifton Springs,
N.Y. pilot to bypass the Lebanon Valley 200 last weekend. “All we had left was our
Syracuse motor and we just didn’t want to take a chance,” Tomkins said. “We spent this
whole week rebuilding our Mastin motor and putting our new Bicknell chassis together.
Things can only get better”…..The last race former tour regular Kenny Stafford earned
Series points was at Brockville Ontario Speedway in early July. The ’06 DIRTcar Big-
Block Modified Rookie of the Year from Homer, N.Y. recently saw where he stood in the
standings and returned to action this past weekend at Rolling Wheels. “We saw we had
a chance to still be in the top-15 going into Syracuse and that was our goal coming here
today,” Stafford said. “We’ve got my old skin on this car but its an ’06 TEO with an
engine done by Wayne Curtis who built my 4-cylinder Mod motors. We’re hoping to get
something together by Super DIRT Week but nothing’s certain after that. We stopped
this year due to all the time constraints. I’ll probably get the race program back together
after college but right now its been a pretty heavy load keeping up with both,” added
Stafford, who transferred in the past year from Alfred Tech to pursue a double
Engineering/Business major at Buffalo State…..Fresh off his 10th top-five finish in the
2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series the night before at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway,
Rookie of the Year candidate Tim Fuller racked up a pair of fourth-place tallies at
Rolling Wheels on Saturday to remain atop the current Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block standings
with just one month to go. Fuller ranks eight on the WoO LM points chart with his firstever
full-fender feature win scored this season…..Ed Kitchell was the 39th and last
Modified driver to sign at Rolling Wheels on Saturday and his chrome-polished no. X
entry probably recorded the fewest laps of any during the Big-Block portion of the show.
The Rhode Island resident could muster only two laps under green in the third heat
before being lapped by race winner Billy Decker. He returned aboard the shiny silver
Prototype Design, Inc. creation for the consolation round and only lasted a couple more
laps before smoke began to billow out from the low-slung racing machine. Kitchell said
he has plans to be at Super DIRT Week in October to make another test run with his
unique machine.
Get Out The Word First: RACEceiver is the Official Driver Communicator of DIRTcar
Racing. A compact radio receiver that conveniently fits into a driver’s pocket, a
RACEceiver allows each driver to hear directions from series officials, which greatly
enhances the safety and timeliness of events. A similar version available to fans will
allow RACEceiver users to hear what information series officials are relaying to the
drivers. For more information about RACEceiver, visit www.raceceiver.com, call
866/301-7223, or look for their sales trailers at select events.
Tracks Know The Score: In the ongoing effort to assist every sanctioned track with
presenting the best possible race programs, DIRTcar has teamed with AMB i.t. which
continues to be recognized as the Official Timing System of DIRTcar racing. AMB i.t. is
the world’s leader in automatic race timing and scoring systems and the DIRT
organization is proud to retain the company as a valued partner in the timing and
scoring of all DIRTcar Racing events.
UPCOMING EVENT
Only three extra-distance events remain on the 2007 Advance Auto Parts Super
DIRTcar Series schedule. Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the Syracuse Mile concludes
with the nationally recognized Rite Aid 200 on Oct. 7 and is followed by the highly
anticipated return to New Egypt (NJ) Speedway on Oct. 13 for twin 60s, before Eastern
States Weekend at Orange County Fair (NY) Speedway brings the curtain down on
Oct. 21 with the big 200-lap season finale in Middletown. Both Syracuse and Orange
County races are also the final ‘Triple Crown’ events of the season with 150 points on
the line for the winner and 50 points awarded to start.
