Steve Shaver has produced many strong performances this season with the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series; but had yet to find his way into victory lane, that is until entering the MACS sanctioned “Harvest 50”. ‘Showtime’ masterfully dissected his competition leading the entire distance of this honored event at the Billy Jarrell Motorsports, owned, Skyline Speedway.
Steve Lucas and Shaver brought the star-studded 24-car field to green with Shaver quickly jumping into the lead as the field barreled into turn one. Lucas trying to hold onto second was already battling an ill-handling car as he pushed up the racetrack coming out of turn two opening the door for third starting Dave Hess Jr. to move into second.
Shaver led the first three circuits followed by Hess, Lucas, ’05 MACS Champion Mike Balzano, and young gun Corey Conley all in tow. The first and only caution appeared at the end of the third circuit as Chris Garnes and Paul Wilmoth, Jr. danced together in turn three.
Shaver gathered the field behind him for the double-file “Delaware Style” restart. As Shaver again ignited the field and continued to lead, Conley, Jason Montgomery, and Alex Ferree were in a dogfight as they battled for fifth. The standing-room-only crowd was on the edge of their seats cheering for their favorites as ‘Hot Rod’ Conley, 2007 MACS Rookie of the Year contender Matt Lux, Doug Drown, from 20th, and Josh McGuire were running three and four wide. Lap after lap this quartet was putting on a dazzling show as each tried to cement a top ten finish. The most amazing aspect of the battle for position was that McGuire, who started 17th after winning one of the two B-Mains, pitted on the lap three with a flat tire and had steadily raced his way back into the top by lap 16.
The action was extreme as Shaver continued his onslaught through lapped traffic with Hess glued to his rear. Hess pressured Shaver more and more as the laps continued to click by. McGuire, never losing sight of the leaders, was still knifing his way through the field. By lap 24, McGuire’s brazen move catapulted him from eighth to fifth in one corner passing Lucas, Montgomery, and Jeff Burdette.
Shaver was still on point though Hess had shown him his nose several times and had actually passed him in lapped traffic only to lose the lead back to Shaver by the time the duo got back to the stripe. The next trio included Balzano, McGuire, and ’04 MACS Champion Rob Blair from 11th. McGuire was able to make his way past Balzano in the late stages of the event moving Balzano to fourth.
At the checkers it was Shaver taking his first MACS victory of the season over Hess, McGuire, Balzano, and Blair. Tim Dohm led the next tier of five drivers in sixth over Montgomery , Jarod Hawkins, Drown, and Jeff Burdette.
