DONNY SCHATZ DOMINATES NATIONAL OPEN
MECHANICSBURG, PA â Donny Schatz clearly is the number one driver in sprint car racing and he proved it Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway by leading all 40 laps of the Cleveland Brothers National Open for sprint cars.
Schatz earned $50,000 for his performance.
The current World of Outlawas points leader started alongside Williams Grove points leaderTodd Shaffer and took the lead at the drop of the green. Schatz, 30, of Fargo, ND, was never challenged en route to his fifth and by far his richest victory at Williams Grove this season.
It was the fourth time he has won the National Open, which tied Steve Kinser for most victories in theEastâs most prestigious sprint car race. It also capped a year in which Schatz won the Groveâs Summer Nationals, Lernernerville Speedwayâs Silver Cup, Eldoraâs Kingâs Royal and the Knoxville Nationals. It also allowed him to increase his lead in the World of Outlaws point standings.
While Schatz checked out, Shaffer and Lance Dewease waged a tremendous battle for second place. Dewease started 13th and moved into third on lap 19 then began to challenge Shaffer for the rumnerup spot.
Shaffer prevailed and locked up the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass track championship in the process.
Second place paid $12,000 and the championship was worth $15,000 for Shaffer.
Dewease settled for third. Danny Lasoski, who started 16th, advanced to fourth and Greg Hodnett completed the top five.
Doug Esh, Joey Saldana, Paul McMahan, Daryn Pittman and T. J. Stutts finished in positions six through ten respectively.
Heats for the 55 sprint cars were won by Lucas Wolfe, Ed Lynch, Jr., Kerry Madsen and Schatz.
Wolfe set quick time in qualifications with a lap of 16.611.
Alan Cole won the D-main. The C-main was won by Jason Meyers and Dewease claimed the B.
Schatz copped the Crane Cams Dash.
