Tyler Hershey Wins the 2nd Annual Susquehanna Showdown with Patience at SSP; Graves and Richcreek Also Victorious at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (September 29, 2007) – The 2nd Annual Susquehanna Showdown on Saturday Night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park found Tyler Hershey besting the strong field of 52 Late Models to pick up the $5,000 check in victory lane. After the race, Hershey was unable to collect the $25,000 bonus as his luck finally ran out by not picking the two correct envelopes to win the binus money. Carl Graves won the open wheel Modified Challenge race as York Haven’s Butch Richcreek, Jr. won the York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van race.
Scott Palmer and Gene Knaub brought the 25-car field to the green flag of the 50-lap Susquehanna Showdown Late Model A-Main. Knaub jumped out to the early lead with Richard Walls and Tyler Hershey pursuing early. After six caution flag periods in the first 20 laps, a fuel stop was used to refuel the cars so that they would be able to finish the race without running out of fuel. Just before the stop Hershey moved into second place behind Knaub.
After the red flag, Knaub continued to lead over Hershey and Walls however the pursuit was hot and heavy. A few more caution flags allowed Hershey to test Knaub, but he was not able to overtake him. Meanwhile as the front of the field battled, 2007 SSP Track Champion moved from a 25th place to 4th place on the 32nd lap after using a provisional to get into the race. However, just as he was ready to take over third place from Kyle Lear, his hood flew up in the air, blocking his vision. The yellow flag flew and Billet returned to the pits to have his hood removed, but this ended any hopes of Billet to win the race.
When racing resumed, Knaub and Hershey continued their side by side battle. Before the race, Knaub chose a softer compound for the right rear Hoosier tire and Hershey opted for the harder. On lap 38, Hershey was finally able to take the lead from Knaub as Knaub’s tire began to finally show signs of wear. Behind them, Kyle Lear, Jerry Bard and Chuck Yingling had a great three way battle between themselves. At the end, Hershey picked up the win by 10 car lengths over Knaub who was able to hold onto second. Bard won the battle for third over Lear and Yingling. Dave Sokolowski picked up sixth place and also collected the Hard Charger award after starting 24th in the A-main and advancing through the C-main and B-Main. Rounding out the top ten were Steve Weikel, Ashley Barrett, Scott Richwine and Jake Jones.
Picking up the Late Model heat race wins presented by Blazer’s Auto Body were Tyler Armstrong, Scott Richwine, Richard Walls, Hershey and Knaub. Paul Crowl and Mike Shoemaker won the B-Main and C-Mains respectively.
The Open Wheel Modified Challenge found Carl Graves in victory lane as he took the lead from Will Rowe on the 12th lap after the two battled side by side for many laps in the 20 lap feature event. Rowe finished second, followed by Bret Hamilton, Eric Erwin and Brent Bordeaux.
In the 12-lap York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van feature, Butch Richcreek, Jr. took the lead on the ninth circuit to win his 6th win of the season over Brandon Ort, Scott Hughes, Daryl Sipe and Jeff Svendsen.
