Hansen BRP CanAm Winner of MCR Fall Classic
E. Smethport, PA…Add Todd Hansen to the BRP CanAm Series winners list for 2007. Hansen topped a 43 car field of BRP CanAm Late Model racers at the 2nd Annual McKean County Raceway [MCR] to record his first Series win of 2007 and second of his career.
Hansen lined his Carmichael & Reed Monuments sponsored GorDen powered CRS Impala sixth in the classy 27 car starting field. The Franklinville, NY weekend warrior hung around the top 10 for the early portion of the caution plagued event. He used patience for a while, the misfortunes of others in front of him, and then “got up on the wheel.” Hansen was third at lap 15. Then second to Jim Johnson at lap 20. Those two crossed the line on lap 21 side-by-side. Tommy Elder’s score board showed 58 [Hansen] first and 93 [Johnson] second on lap 22. There was no change for the top two as Tony VanPelt’s double checkers flew on lap 25.
Hansen has only competed in five of the 17 Series events this year; accordingly, points are not important to him. However, for Jim Johnson points are very important.
Johnson entered the event second in the $30,000 point battle 44 points behind Jeff Chesebro. Chesebro was having ignition problems running mid-pack while Johnson was leading. Chesebro actually ducked into the pits during a caution for repairs to his hot rod. He was back out without losing a lap and finished 11th. Johnson narrowed the gap for the Championship to just nine points [Chesebro 1222 Vs Johnson 1213] with two events remaining on the 2007 Series schedule.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the great drive turned in by Tom Schnars. Schnars recorded his best ever Series finish when he brought his #M1 Shaw Monte Carlo home in the show spot. Tom’s only other top ten finish in Series history was fifth at Eriez in July. Tom was still smiling an hour after the race finished and his car passed all the inspections in the Tech Barn.
Randy Hall earned the DART Machinery Hard Charger Award for his drive from 25th to 4th. Hall had a flat tire on the opening lap of his heat. Started last in a B-Main and was not able to crack the top two for a transfer spot. The defending Series champion used a provision spot to start the race. Hall passed a lot of cars at speed and some others as they sat crashed by the wayside. For Hall and several others it was a matter of being both good and lucky.
Larry Knowles rounded out the top five with a spirited drive from 16th at the start. Knowles had won the two prior Series events at MCR and entered a favorite to add to his 2007 win record. It did not work out exactly as Knowles would have preferred, but the car was in one piece, he had a decent payday, and he gained a little ground in the Championship Chase.
Completing the top ten were: Neil Patterson, Rich Michael, Dan Cobb, Mike Williams, and Bob Buono.
The Rookies – Williams and Buono – are putting on incredible shows each event as the “mirror” each other’s performance. Last night they were even both in the same four car crash-n-go.
The 43 entries were reduced to 27 starters via five F/A Products – Clevite Heat Races which were won by Glenn Whritenour, Jim Johnson, Jeff Chesebro, Larry Knowles, and Jeremy Wonderling. Ed Carley Motorsports B-Mains were won by Paul Grigsby and Neil Patterson. Rich Michael was an added starter as a result of his opening night win at MCR.
