$66,000 MACS’ BIG Kahuna VII Weekend Up Next at “The Rock”

Just five short days remain before Oval Track Promotions, Rick and Ernie Jones, eagerly welcome the return of the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series to sanction the $66,000 Big Kahuna VII weekend at the “The Rock” Allegany County Speedway, Cumberland , MD. The Big Kahuna again this year is two separate one-day shows on Friday and Saturday, October 5 & 6. This is the third time the Series has sanctioned this event since the inaugural version.

The picturesque, mountain back drop for this 5/8 mile, slightly banked speed plant affectionately known as “The Rock” captures the high octane, 800 horsepower MACS Super Late Models for a pair of 44-lap shootouts each night paying $5,000 to-win. The purse for each show is approximately $33,000 with the weekend total over $66,000.

The “Big Kahuna” purse each night is: 1. $5,000; 2. $3,000; 3. $2,000; 4. $1,500; 5. $1,250; 6. $1,100; 7 $1,050; 8. $1,000 9. $950; 10. $850; 11.$750; 12. $650; 13. $575; 14. $550; 15. $525; 16. $520; 17. $515; 18. $510; 19 $505; 20-26. $500. All drivers who do not transfer to the A Main will receive $125.00 tow money each night.

Past MACS Series winners at “The Rock” include: Mother Nature April 2007; ’06 Big Kahuna winners Rick Elliott and Steve Shaver, as well as Gary Stuhler in April 2006; the lone ‘05 appearance was rained out and unable to be rescheduled; Francis (’01); Bo Feathers (‘00); and Stuhler again in 1998. The average MACS car count for MACS events is 50 cars.

The history of the Big Kahuna dates back to 2001 with then promoter Bob Salathe. Steve Francis took home the $7,500 MACS sanctioned inaugural win of the three night extravaganza. The MACS event drew this highest car count of the weekend with 77 cars from 13 states. The next night was sanctioned by the former Renegade Series paying $10,000 to-win and was captured by Todd Andrews. The finale that year was sanctioned by the former UDTRA series and paid $15,000 to-win with Steve Shaver taking home the victory.

In 2002 the Big Kahuna was trimmed to two nights and Rick Eckert won the opening $10,000 to-win Renegade program while Shaver scored another $15,000 victory once again topping the UDTRA segment.

Then in 2003 the event was non-sanctioned, and Travis Dillman captured his richest pay day ever at $10,000. The Big Kahuna IV was captured by Davey Johnson while 2005 version was claimed by Mark Banal. Each of those drivers also earned a cool 10G’s.

Last year the MACS Series once again sanctioned the event and it was divided into two separate one-day shows paying $5,000 to-win for each 44-lap A Main. The event was rain postponed into the first weekend of November and the frosty first night brought 52 cars while the bitterly cold second night produced 38. Shaver won the first round while Rick Elliott captured the second.

Gates Open at 3:00 p.m., with the drivers meeting at 6:00 p.m. Hot laps at scheduled for 6:45 p.m. with time trails slate for 7:15 p.m. Racing will immediately follow the conclusion of time trials at approximately 8:00 p.m. For more information contact the “The Rocks’ web address is www.therockspeedway.com. or the Series at http://www.macsracing.com.

Series Drivers anticipated for the event are defending Series Champions Jason Covert (‘06), Mike Balzano (“05), Robbie Blair (“04), Chuck Harper (“03) and Jack Pencil (’02). Also anticipated to participate are: “Hot Rod” Rod Conley; Doug Drown, Jeremy Miller; Jim Bernheisel; 2007 leading MACS ROY contenders Matt Lux as well as Chuck Clise. Steve Shaver may try to put another notch in his belt attempting to capture his fourth win.

Each regular MACS event consist of AlturnaMats® “Shock the Clock” time trials presented by Sue Stevenson Photography, AlturnaMats® “Dash King” competition presented by WRISCO Aluminum; heats are presented by Bud Watson’s Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic (HTMA) and Hoosier Racing Tires; Lias Tire Racing Division/American Racer; Dave Poske Performance Parts/Hoosier Tire Ohio Valley and Rocket Chassis; ATL Fuel Cells and BERT Transmission; Mason Racin’ and GRT Chassis; Frankland Racing Supply and American Die Cast; King’s Jewelry/Artcarved; Pietragallo, Bosick & Gordon, Corporate Lawyers Pittsburgh and Design 500 Racewear; and the Sunoco Race Fuels 1st B Main presented by Bazell Fuels as well as the Warrior Race Cars 2nd B Main presented by Goddard Performance Parts. Additionally, the MACS ROY chase is presented by Wild Side Custom Racing Trailers determining the ROY title. The MACS Hard Charger is sponsored by WRISCO Aluminum.

Other sponsors included Booze Brothers Racing and Country Candles. Lee Havlik’s Chase Decals; (IA) is providing a $100 gift certificate per event for the “Hard Luck” Award. Additionally Chase Decals will be providing $800 gift certificate for the MACS 2007 Champion as well as for the MACS ROY and the driver in the top 10 with the worst luck of the season. Genesis Shocks will be providing over $3,000 worth of gift certificates to the fast qualifiers of five selected events as well as the final top ten in Series points. These two shows will be in the fast qualifier program for Genesis.

Duralite Wheels, (OK) are awarding six new aluminum wheels to drivers in the final top ten of points. Four wheels will be standard late model aluminum wheels while the two will be beadlock wheel. ACPT Carbon Fiber Drive Shafts (CA) will be awarding a new customized carbon fiber drive shaft to one of the drivers in the final top ten of points. Ron “Flea” Fleenor’s Custom Helmet Art (NC) is providing a customized helmet paint job for the champion as well as the MACS ROY.

Jamie Christy’s Impact Graphics (KY) will be picking ten races providing $100 gift certificate for the “Quick Time Award” and if that same driver that sets fast time is able to win that night’s feature s/he will earn an additional $100 gift certificate. Impact will also provide a complete decal job for the 5th place finisher in the final points standings valued at $800 as well as a $250 gift certificate to the 7th place finisher in the final points standings.
