DICK SWEET RESIGNS AS UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY GENERAL MANAGER

VERNON , NY- After a three year stint as General Manager of Utica-Rome Speedway, Dick Sweet officially resigned from that position on Monday October 1. When Sweet originally agreed to become GM of the Vernon speedplant, he planned on a two year stay that eventually became a three season deal. With Sweet at the helm, Utica-Rome Speedway has flourished with great crowds and great racing, living up to it’s nickname as “The Action Track of the East”.

Under Sweet’s guidance, along with track owner Gene Cole, Utica-Rome Speedway has seen many improvements during his three years of employment. A new high rise grandstand was added, the restrooms were refurbished, a new scale area was built, new clay added to the racing surface, plus many, many more improvements. Even now at the end of Sweet’s reign, the front and back stretch wall have been torn down with new ones being installed. Not only did Sweet oversee many of these improvements, but he was responsible for much of the track preparation leading into the weekly Sunday evening events along with handling event sponsorships and race night activities.

Sweet also wasn’t afraid of trying new and different events either, as he promoted the successful Pumpkin Pie event which featured the Pro Stocks in a high paying event. This season, he helped bring back the New Yorker to Utica-Rome Speedway after a 14 year hiatus. This year’s version was 200 laps in length with $10,000 going to Stewart Friesen after the dust settled. An incredible $1,000 was paid to just start the event and plans are already in the works for the 2008 edition of the New Yorker 200.

Sweet, who’s permanent residence is in Florida, cited personal reasons for leaving his role of General Manager of the Utica-Rome Speedway and both he and Gene Cole wants everyone to know that this split is under the best of terms. Sweet’s final event as GM will come on November 17 when Utica-Rome Speedway holds their Annual Awards Banquet at the Turning Stone Casino & Resort.
