ROSSBURG, OH (Oct. 5) --A talent-lade field of 196 entrants embarked upon Eldora Speedway Friday for opening night of the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Nationals Friday, with Jimmy Westerfield topping the 117 Modifieds with a clocking of 18.502 seconds, while Wes Steidinger toured the one-half mile clay oval in 16.045 to pace the 79 Late Models on hand.
Steidinger’s time may have come as a surprise to many, as he bested the likes of Scott Bloomquist, last month’s World 100 winner Jimmy Owens, former World 100 winner Dan Schlieper and former Dirt Late Model Dream winner Darrell Lanigan, among others, but he backed that up with a solid win in the UMP Race of Champions.
The balance of the Late Model qualifiers will be staged Saturday night, but Steidinger’s time guarantees him a spot in the A-Main, should he fail to qualify through his heats.
Capturing Modified preliminary events were Don Adams, Kent Robinson, Lance Dehm, Scott Orr, Kyle Brown, Jerry Bowersock, Rob Williams and Shelby Miles.
Rounding out Saturday’s final night of action at Eldora for 2007 will be the Modified Race of Champions, last chance consies for each division and the headlining main events. The Modifieds will race 25 laps for a $3,000 top prize, while the Late Models will battle for 40 laps and a winner’s share of $10,000. Each main event will start 28 cars.
