Bates Wins At Cayuga County — And He’s In The Rite Aid 200

Weedsport, NY – October 6, 2006 – By Chris Dolack, DIRTcar Racing PR

Kevin Bates held off hard charging Alan Johnson on Saturday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway to earn the final spot in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Rite Aid 200 at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Intensity was high with a qualifying spot open for the $50,000-to-win Super DIRT Week highlight event on the line. Drivers deep in the 24-car field looked for any advantage at the start, going three- and four-wide off of Turn 4, but when pole-sitter Pierre Dagenais brought out the fourth caution of the night in the early going, Bates moved to the point and fought off Johnson through heavy traffic to the checkered flag.

When rain forced the rest of the Twin 25 program to be called off for the night, Bates was declared the winner of the qualifying spot.

“I’ve been around him a long time. We’re really good friends. It’s fun when the two of us get to race like that. I figured he’d be coming. I didn’t know how long it’d take. I’ve watched him a long time, I know where he runs. I just tried to block the groove I figured he was going to try. Definitely in lapped traffic I thought he’d be coming. I thought he’d be getting through a little better than I was. I was having some problems. I couldn’t steer through the turns very well. I figured for sure he’d take a shot at me but I guess he was having the same problems.

“It wasn’t bad. It was decent no matter where. I’m happy with it. We got a fresh motor under the hood and I’ll tell you it really seems to run.”

The rain that started falling shortly after the first modified feature intensified after the BRP Late Models began their feature. Don Newton was in front after three laps when the action was halted.

There were 31 Big Block Modifieds entered and 37 BRP Late Models.
