CHUCK HEBING SCORES REPEAT VICTORY IN RAIN DELAYED SPRINT CHALLENGE AT
THE WHEELS SUNDAY NIGHT

ELBRIDGE, NY . . . . A field of sixty-seven 360 sprint cars
turned out Saturday night, October 6 for the thirteenth running of the
Sprint Challenge at the Wheels, a co-sanctioned event by URC and ESS.
After a long rain delay that forced the completion of this event to
Sunday night, Chuck Hebing of Ontario, NY claimed the win for the second
consecutive year, pocketing a hefty $3,000. Heat races that took place
on Saturday night prior to the rain, were won by Jason Barney, Chuck
Hebing, Tim Kelly, Jeff Cook, Mares Stellfox, and Kramer Williamson. On
Sunday night, the competitors returned with two "B" Main events that
were won by Rick Wilson and Bobby Breen. By luck of the draw, Hebing
drew the pole starting position and led the entire twenty-five lap
distance. Late in the race, Steve Poirior threatened Hebing for the
lead, then on the final lap, he tangled with a lapped car only to spin
and display the yellow flag. When the race resumed, Hebing toured the
Rolling Wheels Raceway for the last circuit to easily score the win.

In the feature event, Hebing gunned from his pole starting position,
establishing a commanding lead within the first two circuits. Jason
Barney followed in second with Robbie Stillwaggon making up the top
three. The first caution of the event was displayed on lap six when
motor problems forced Kramer Williamson to stop on the homestretch. On
the restart, Hebing again left no doubt that he was the leader and in
change. On lap seven, the yellow was again displayed, this time for
Rick Wilson who spun in turn two.

With green flag racing again underway, Hebing, Barney and Curt Michael
were the top three with Steve Poirior on this way to the front of the
pack. At the halfway point of the race, Hebing was far ahead with
Barney second, Poirior third Curt Michael fourth and Robbie Stillwaggon
fifth.

The caution flag was waiving on lap fourteen for Scott Kreutter who
stopped on the speedway. On the restart, Poirior gunned into second and
set his sights on the leader. The big lead once held by Hebing was
dwindling and Poirier was gaining ground. With just five laps to go,
Poirior was now in striking distance of taking the lead. Hebing was
using the high groove with Poinier on the bottom. As the battle for the
lead was shaping up, Blake Breen was on a charge, chasing Curt Michael
for the third position.

With the white flag waiving, Poirier was chasing Hebing into turns one
and two. For the run down the backstretch, Poirier was gaining then the
lapped car of Mares Stellfox spun in turns three and four. Race leader
Chuck Hebing narrowly missed the spinning sprint car as Steve Poirier
spun to avoid, displaying the caution.

With just one lap remaining, this moved Jason Barney into second with
Curt Michael third. At the drop of the green, Hebing blasted away from
the rest of the pack, as Blake Breen went to work on Michael. Going
into turn three, Breen made a bold pass to go around Curt Michael and
take third place behind Hebing and Barney. Rounding out the top five
were Curt Michael and Tim Kelly.
