Francis, Owens, McDowell, Cook take opening night 'Tennessee Fall Brawl 100' World of Outlaws heat race wins at Volunteer Speedway

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (Oct. 12) — Race fans, the “outlaws” have invaded East Tennessee ! It’s going to be an all-out war Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway when 24 of the nation’s top World of Outlaws Late Model Series competitors battle for supremacy in the $20,000-to-win ... $1,500-to-start Tennessee Fall Brawl 100 presented by the Rusty Wallace Automotive Group.

On a very chilly Friday night in East Tennessee , preliminary qualifying and heat races were held for the 52 race teams present. Rick Rogers of Knoxville , Tenn. , heated the action up by running a blistering lap at 12.364-seconds (116.467 mph) to set fast-time over Vic Hill of Morristown, Tenn., who timed-in at 12.386 to narrowly edge out Shane Clanton of Locust Grove , Ga. , who toured the high-banked 4/10-mile oval at 12.388. Fourth and fifth quickest, respectively, were Michael England of Glasgow, Ky. (12.465), and current WoO points leader Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky. (12.474).

Four 15-lap heat races were held, with the top-4 finishers from each transferring into Saturday's Tennessee Fall Brawl 100. Francis easily outdistanced Rogers, Randy Weaver and Clint Smith to win the first heat. Jimmy Owens of Newport , Tenn. , dueled early in the second heat with Hill before holding on for the victory over "The Thrill," with Scott Bloomquist and Brian Shirley finishing in third and fourth, respectively.

Dale McDowell of Chickamauga , Ga. , held off fellow Peach State competitor Clanton for the win in the third heat, with Darrell Lanigan and Mark Douglas earning transfer spots. Heat four saw Ray Cook of Brasstown , N.C. , win over England , Dan Schlieper and Josh Richards.

Saturday, Oct. 13 will be an all-Late Model night, with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series $20,000-to-win Tennessee Fall Brawl 100 highlighting the racing program. The evening will begin with two Last Chance Consolations, which will transfer the final entrants into the 24-car starting field. Also in action will be the "Ramey Ford" Crate Late Models as they will run a 25-lap feature event.

Adult grandstand admission on Saturday is $25, children 6-12 $5, with 5-and-under admitted free. Pit admission and backside tier-parking $35.

The pit gate will open Saturday at 3 p.m. and the grandstand gate opens at 4 p.m. Hotlaps are tentatively scheduled to begin around 7 p.m. , to be followed by racing action.

With a big crowd expected for the Tennessee Fall Brawl 100 — lawn chairs will not be allowed in the front straightaway grandstands — only stadium seat cushions with backs on them.
