Former Eastern States Winner Bobby Varin Heading to Orange County
by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Central New York Modified star Bobby Varin will be among the elite group of Modified stars in the field this weekend as the 46th Annual Eastern States 200 takes center stage this weekend at the Orange County Fair Speedway. Varin will once again strap himself behind the belts of the Nancy and Jake Spraker owned Bicknell Chassis/JPM Powered Modified he recently drove to a fourteenth place finish in the Rite Aid 200 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds.
Varin, the 2003 winner of the October Classic, will join an elite group of former winners returning to do battle at the Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway this weekend. Heading the list will be 8-time winner Brett Hearn who comes into the classic as the hands on favorite as the "Corporate Jet" has won the last three races in a row and four of the past five. The "Doctor" Danny Johnson has four victories to his credit and is sure to be a threat to win anywhere he races. Two time winners include New Egyt Speedway regulars Jimmy Horton and Frank Cozze. Joining Varin as one-time winners include Billy Decker, Chuck McKee, Jack Johnson, Alan Johnson and Kenny Brightbill.
Varin, who has not competed at Orange County since last year's race, comes into the event with seven feature event wins to his credit in 2007. Five of those wins came at the famous Fonda Fairgrounds where Varin battled down to the wire with 2007 track champion Matt DeLorenzo. Just 35-points separated the pair at the end of the points battle. A pair of high-dollar wins for Varin highlighted his season at Fonda and the three time track champion will seek to regain the title he lost this year. Varin won his Fonda titles in 2000, 2005 and 2006.
Varin did bring the Dave Cruickshank owned, numbered 00 Dover Brake machine to the OCFS speedway in June and acted as a mentor for NASCAR star David Reutiman as part of the Super Dirt Series promotion
with Escape RV, an event that also brought NASCAR driving star Carl Edwards to the track to compete.
The Varin team, in preparation for the grueling weekend event, has gone over the car in every detail to hopefully put Varin in the thick of the competition in the running for the $20,000.00 prize posted by the Orange County Management. The new Bicknell race car has been prepared by the Nancy and Jake Spraker team in an effort to propel Varin into victory lane. A new JPM Big Block powerplant will supply the horsepower to the rear wheels for Varin as he attempts to win for the second time at the Orange County "Hard Clay." The team will concentrate on the Big Block portion of the Eastern States event only as the team has already began working on sorting out the equipment for strong runs in 2008.
Varin's son Danny, also enjoyed a great racing season in 2007. The 16-year old rising star finished fourth in the seasonal points at Fonda, and just out of the top ten in eleventh at Utica Rome. Danny Varin comepted at Syracuse for the first time in his young career and came away with a 15th-place finish in his first effort on the "Moody Mile." Danny Varin also had the opportunity to run in selected Truck races over at the Adirondack Speedway and the youngster has shown he is equally as gifted on the pavement as he is on the dirt. Varin is looking to do more of that type of racing in the future.
Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support during the 2007 season. More updates will follow for the Varin Racing team efforts. Futher updates and information can be found on the Bobby Varin Website at: http://www.bobbyvarin.com
