ABOUT THE TRACK
The oldest continuously running track in operation on the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast
circuit, throughout the regular season Orange County operates every Saturday night
featuring DIRTcar Big-Block Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock and Pure Stock classes on
the regular weekly card with DIRTcar 358-Modified contests scheduled a dozen times in
between. The speedway hosted a special stop by the nationally acclaimed World of
Outlaw Sprint Series while the 2007 campaign concludes in October with the 46th
Annual Eastern States 200 for DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds. OCFS initially joined the
DIRT fold in 1983 and that same year began holding time trials during Eastern States
Weekend. Use of the AMB i.t. scoring and timing system was first introduced in the
2000 Advance Auto Parts Series show staged in August. All-time Orange County
champion Brett Hearn established the modern-day DIRTcar Big-Block Modified record
touring the fast 5/8-miler in a time of 21.345 sec. (105.411 mph) on Oct. 26, 2003.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
Eastern States Weekend at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Middletown , NY remains
the biggest, richest and oldest consecutively run championship race for DIRTcar Big-
Block Modifieds in the country. During the past 45 years some of the best drivers ever
to run in the Northeast have etched their name in the ‘Hard Clay’ record book and still
more are waiting their turn as the 2007 edition unfolds this weekend. From its modest
beginnings in 1962 when Orange County (then known as Victory Speedway) promoter
Eno VanDam, race director Larry Granger and his assistant Jim O’Melia put together
the first 100-lap single-day event at the fairgrounds, Eastern States has not only
survived the test of time it has been the standard that many others have copied to this
day. What race fans take for granted today and refer to as the ‘second season’ ---post
Labor Day--- did not exist 46 years ago. Aside from the Langhorne National Open, there
were no late season big events as most tracks in the Northeast had shut down by the
end of September, running as long as weather permitted or as long as promoters felt
they could still draw fans. And with most tracks crowning point champions there was
little purpose to race any later. The introduction of the inaugural Eastern States 100 in
late October paying the winner $1,000 from a $4,000 purse forever changed that
outlook for racers in this part of the country and when legendary stock car driver Frankie
Schneider captured that first checkered flag it was destined to become the premier
short-track race of its kind for generations to come.

2006 EASTERN STATES RECAP
Improving a single position from his runner-up finish in the 150-lap Small-Block feature
the day before, DIRTcar Big-Block specialist Brett Hearn capped off the 45th Eastern
States Weekend by capturing the headline Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series
Modified 200 on Sunday afternoon at Orange County Fair Speedway. The $20,000
triumph for Hearn was a record third straight in Orange County ’s nationally recognized
short-track season-finale, with the Sussex , N.J. driver now owning eight E-S trophies
since copping his first double-century grind in 1979. Hearn was dominant from the drop
of the initial green flag, out-dragging pole-sitter and Integra Shocks fast timer Rick Mill
to lead the first of his race-high total of 150 ahead of the 43-car starting field. He
maintained a comfortable distance over his nearest challengers through lap 55 when he
pulled pitside for his mandatory stop to relinquish the point to Tim Fuller. The Edwards,
N.Y. pilot collected the $1,000 Budweiser-Dana Distributors halfway bonus before
making his own pit stop on lap 106 allowing Hearn to regain the top spot. But Hearn’s
sixth victory of the season at the historic Middletown oval was far from secure as with a
half-dozen laps remaining a vibration had the ‘Corporate Jet’ tip-toeing around the hard
5/8-miler trying to save his tires. Moments after Hearn raced under the checkered flag
the right-rear tire went flat, as did that of runner-up Frank Cozze. Local favorite Jerry
Higbie chased the pair across the line while Tommy Meier and Pat Ward completed the
top-five. Hearn scored the rare trifecta steering three different TEO Pro cars, beginning
with the red no. 3 Budweiser Racing-Kruger-WLR Construction entry in 2004, repeating
aboard the blue no. 3 Page Trucking-Gable Auto Stores ride in ’05 before completing
the hat trick last autumn in the Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-
BPG Racing machine.
2007 SERIES RACE REVIEW
Front row is the place to start when the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series
comes to Middletown for the annual tour stop at Orange County Fair Speedway.
DIRTcar Big-Block Modified veteran Frank Cozze from Wind Gap. Pa. proved it for the
second straight year as he led flag-to-flag to capture the Cedar Ridge RV Center 75 in
convincing fashion. Cozze won the first qualifying heat, drew the pole then proceeded to
hold off runner-up Matt Sheppard for the entire 75-lap distance around the legendary
‘Hard Clay’ oval. Wheeling the no. 44 Waite's General Contractors-Carquest-Bert
Transmission/PMC entry, he mirrored last year’s performance staged by Billy Decker
who led all 100 laps to collect the $6,000 top prize. Sheppard shadowed Cozze every
turn of every lap, creeping up to his bumper on a number of occasions, yet unable to
make the pass in the Ross Motorsports no. 44s BKS/G-U-Currier Plastics-Magee
Transport-Adam Ross/Bicknell special as the leader clung to the low line without
flinching. In the fast-paced feature that took just over 30 minutes to run and averaged
91.545 mph, only two brief caution periods during the final 15 laps put Cozze’s victory
lane speech on hold. Both yellow flags unfurled due to flat tires, the first falling on lap 61
for Rick Laubach’s blown right rear and the second on lap 66 when tour regular Jimmy
Phelps lost tire pressure riding the H&H Motorsports no.98H Mohawk Northeast-New
England Race Fuels/Troyer machine. When the checkered flag finally waved, Cozze
had opened up a half-dozen car-length advantage over Sheppard with nearly another
full second separating the leaders from third-place runner Paine. Integra Shocks Fast
Timer Decker and Mike Ricci filled out the front-five. Ten-time Orange County Series
race winner Brett Hearn was not a factor during the night yet still made up the most
ground near the front of the pack finishing eighth after starting 12th despite winning the
second of six qualifying heats and setting second-fast time.
TRACK HISTORY
Orange County Fair Speedway boasts one of the greatest racing heritages in all of
motorsports, including a winner’s list that is headed by modern-day superstar Brett
Hearn and bolstered by many of the best drivers ever to compete on the Northeastern
Modified circuit. The original Middletown tract was built for horse racing in 1857 and
called “The Harry Clay Oval” after a famous horse named Harry Clay. Joe Coates from
nearby Goshen , N.Y. rebuilt the track in 1924, taking clay from Finan’s Pond and when
it hardened was unequaled by any other in the area; the surface became extremely
hard yet soft enough not to injure the hooves of horses. Initially laid out as half-mile, the
track was both widened and lengthened over the years to its present day 5/8-mile size
and the present grandstand structure was built in 1925. This year marked the 167th
Annual Orange County Fair.
Auto racing enthusiast George Martin was appointed as Orange County Fair Society
Director in 1909 and his motion in 1913 to bring cars on the last day of the fair in place
of horses was finally approved by the Fairboard six years later. An overflow crowd of
5,000 curious spectators came out to the track on August 15, 1919 to witness Jim
Benedict best nine other entries to claim the inaugural 10-lap AAA-sanctioned race
which paid $75.00 the winner. Annual fair races continued to prosper on the ‘Hard Clay’
and 1941 marked the first time two events were held. Following the end of WWII the
name was changed to “Victory Speedway” and in 1946 it was announced by track
promoter Russ Carpenter that ARDC Midgets would race each Wednesday night. While
pictures substantiate that stock cars first circled the inner 1/5-mile track one year prior, a
new era in track history began when the first official race was run off on Sept. 18, 1948
and won by Rocky Dinatale from Trenton , N.J. June 7, 1952 marked the first race under
the lights in Middletown . That same year was the first for ‘flatheads’ which evolved into
Sportsman stock cars, then 320-Modifieds and became the DIRT 358-Modifieds that
compete today. Frankie Schneider won the inaugural Eastern States 100 Championship
on October 28, 1962 and the Northeast’s premier short-track event was lengthened to
200 laps in 1968 under the promotion of Orange County Agricultural Society President
Al Howard, who also changed the name to Orange County Fair Speedway.
Taking over the duties of Race Director at the beginning of the 1981 season was Stan
Gurda, brother of majority fairgrounds owner Michael Gurda. Two years later DIRT
MotorSports secured the promotion of speedway racing events under the guidance of
president Glenn Donnelly. From 1983 through 2004, Orange County remained a
cornerstone of DIRT racing in Eastern New York ,and after a one-year absence was
back in the DIRT-fold in ‘06. Under the DIRTcar regime, Hearn has brought further
notoriety to the historic oval situated about an hour from New York City , capturing 13
Big-Block Modified season point titles and racking up 136 feature wins in the past 25
seasons. Jeff Heotzler was recently crowned track champion for the third time. FINAL

NEWS & NOTES
Mr. DIRTcar Champion Ready To Be Crowned: The overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco
Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion in 2007 will be determined by adding
actual points earned in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series to those bonuses
collected in DIRT Regional Racing Series for Big-Blocks. Along with earning valuable
SDS points throughout the season, each driver must now attempt to qualify for a
minimum of twelve (12) weekly DIRT-sanctioned events in the same class. Drivers will
receive 1200 bonus points towards the overall Mr. DIRT Championship if they attempt
to qualify for 12 regional races. That total will decrease by 100 points for each
appearance less than 12 (i.e. if a driver attempts to qualify for only 10 DIRT Regional
Racing Series events that driver receives 1000 bonus points, five starts = 500 points,
etc.).
Commitment To Excellence: For the third straight year tour officials once again signed
up the best Big-Block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance
Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series show. The star-studded group of drivers accepting
contract extensions are reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king and winningest Big-Block
Modified driver Alan Johnson, current Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series
points leader Tim Fuller, all-time DIRTcar Modified win leader Brett Hearn, five-time
DIRTcar NorthEast Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, ‘04 Mr. DIRTcar titlist Gary
Tomkins, third-year tour follower Jimmy Phelps, Canandaigua Speedway recordsetter
Steve Paine, New Egypt Speedway points champion Matt Sheppard, full-time
tour follower Dale Planck, Keystone State open-wheel veteran Frank Cozze, four-time
Super DIRT Week Rite Aid 200 champion Billy Decker and Central New York talent
Justin Hears.
Hearn (1979, 1981, 1986, 1996, 2002, 2004-06), will be among 11 past champions ---
accounting for 23 of the past 28 wins--- attempting to qualify for the headline Advance
Auto Parts Series Eastern States 200 for Big-Block Modifieds when the weekend kicks
off Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Middletown . Expected to join Hearn in
quest of the $20,000 top prize will be past E-S 200 champions Danny Johnson (1992-
93, 1997, 2001), Cozze (1989-90), Jimmy Horton (1991, 1995), Bobby Varin (2003),
Chuck McKee (2000), Alan Johnson (1999), Decker (1998), Rich Eurich (1988), Jack
Johnson (1985) and Kenny Brightbill (1980).
Shock Value To Series Fast Qualifiers In ‘07: For a second straight year Integra
Shocks is playing an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Advance Auto Parts
Super DIRTcar Series during the upcoming race season. The fast driver during 2007
Advance Auto Parts Series qualifying will once again earn the 'Integra Shocks Fast
Time Award' and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during
the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,000 value) at the DIRTcar
Racing NorthEast Banquet in November. The Advance Auto Parts Series has
recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first season the awards
program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Advance Auto
Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a
series-best total of 34 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past 20 years.
Drivers will continue to draw for their order in the 'Integra Shocks Time Trials’ at all
Advance Auto Parts shows, however, this season the fast timer will select a second pill
to determine how many cars (3, 4, 5 or 6) will be inverted to start each preliminary heat
race. The 'Integra Shocks Fast Time Award' winner will collect $100 and five (5) bonus
points and the top-three heat race finishers will earn additional bonus points as follows:
1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. With the new inversion format in place, a driver can now
earn a maximum of 10 more points being the fast timer as well as a heat race winner.
DIRTcar NE Win Leaders: A total of 28 speedways have hosted DIRTcar-sanctioned
Big-Block Modified races with 73 drivers scoring victories in the 193 features run. Along
with recording his 500th career DIRTcar Modified feature win, Brett Hearn (14 wins)
remains atop the ’07 list and is joined by Danny Johnson (11) and Jimmy Phelps (10) as
the only drivers in double figures. Next on the list of 37 drivers posting more than one
victory are Matt Sheppard with eight and Billy Decker and Jeremiah Shingledecker who
own seven apiece. Canandaigua record-setter Steve Paine, Advance Auto Parts Series
stalwarts Alan Johnson and Frank Cozze, and newly crowned Lernerville points
champion Brian Swartzlander come next with six followed by 2007 Rite Aid 200
Champion Vic Coffey, tour mainstay Gary Tomkins, ’07 Tri-City points king Kevin
Bolland and Rex King, each with five. Series points leader Tim Fuller, Justin Haers,
Ryan Godown and ’07 Brewerton Speedway season champion Willy Decker have each
taken four checkered flags while Andy Bachetti and Tom Sears Jr. have made three
trips to victory lane. Led by Series star Dale Planck and tour race winner Pat O’Brien,
17 drivers have repeated with rising Series star Billy Dunn cracking the winner’s circle
on one occasion in ‘07.
Super Series Stats: Since the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series debut in
1980, 66 drivers have reached victory lane in 591 races with Virginia Motor Speedway
becoming in May the 44th track to stage a championship event. Along with Brett Hearn's
DIRT-best 507 (339 big-block/168 small-block) Modified wins registered at more than 30
tracks throughout the Northeast, the 'Jet' has flown to the top on the all-time Advance
Auto Parts (98) Super DIRTcar Series win chart, with a division-best 65 extra-distance
triumphs also scored in Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series competition.

Triple Crown Christened: The customary pre-race re-draw among top heat race
qualifiers will continue to be in effect throughout the summer, with ‘Triple Crown’ events
at Lebanon Valley Speedway , New York State Fairgrounds and Orange County Fair
Speedway the only Advance Auto Parts Series stops awarding fast timers with poleposition
starts. Heat points will not be awarded at these shows.
Continuing to rank among the most prestigious races in the country, the Rite Aid 200 at
the N.Y.S. Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Oct. 7, Eastern States 200 at Orange County on
Oct. 21, and Coors National 200 at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 8 are the only 200-lap
races on the annual tour and in 2007 these three signature events on the Advance Auto
Parts SDS formulate the first ‘Triple Crown’ in DIRTcar Racing for Big-Block Modifieds.
In addition, the Rite Aid 200 winner automatically earns seventh-place on the Eastern
States 200 starting grid and the winner of the Coors National 200 will start outside the
fourth row in the Middletown finale.
This unique ‘Triple Crown’ features the $50,000-to-win Rite Aid 200 in the Salt City ,
$20,000-to-win Eastern States 200 in Middletown (NY) and $10,000-to-win Coors
National 200 at the West Lebanon (NY) oval. These are the only Advance Auto Parts
Series stops where the fast timers start on the pole and the top-six are locked into front
three row starting positions while heats will be aligned in heads-up fashion. A special
points system has been implemented for these three races with each winner receiving
150 Series points and 50 points awarded to start.
Earnhardt Exhibit: Three straight days of speedway action will be accompanied by a
unique off-track entertainment package that features “The Dale Jr. Experience”
consisting of two 53 feet-long and one 37 feet-long trailers that join together to create a
state-of-the-art mobile racing entertainment experience. Designed specifically for adult
consumers to experience an insider's look at Budweiser's sponsorship of NASCAR and
driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr., three distinct experiences are offered including the
Budweiser Pre-Show Gallery, BudVision High-Definition Theatre and the Interactive
Racing Zone. The BudVision Theater offers a behind-the-scenes view of Dale Earnhardt
Jr. and how he spends his time both on and off the race track while the Interactive Zone
features Xbox video games and the Slam Cam. A Budweiser No. 8 replica show car is
also on display, along with the 2004 Daytona 500 replica trophy cup and a life-size Dale
Jr. stand-up for visitor photo opportunities. "The Dale Jr. Experience" is open to the
public free of charge. Attendees must be at least 21 years of age.
