Rain Washes Out Eastern States Weekend 07 Opening Day At Orange County
Middletown, NY October 19, 2006 By Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
On again, off again rain showers throughout the day finally forced DIRTcar Racing officials to postpone opening day qualifying rounds during Eastern States Weekend at Orange County Fair Speedway on Friday.
Opening round time trials to lock in the first three rows for both Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modified and 358-Modified main events have been rescheduled for Saturday morning, making the already packed agenda of events even more full as the 46th edition of Eastern States Weekend continues at the historic fairgrounds in Middletown, N.Y.
We gave it our best shot from the time the gates opened but we just never got the break we needed, said Cory Reed, DIRTcar NorthEast Director of Competition & Track Sanctioning, after reluctantly making the call at 4:10 p.m. We followed the radar all day and thought we had a window to run early in the afternoon. When the last rain started coming down we knew we were locked in for another few hours and that was enough to throw in the towel. Tomorrow will be a busy a day but the forecast looks clear and well get back on track before the afternoon rolls around.
On an already overcast morning, drizzle began to fall over the fairgrounds for the first time around 10:30 a.m., and for the next five hours teased both fans and competitors as it came and went no less than a half-dozen times. Cars took to the track for the first time just after noon before the combination Big-Block/Small-Block hot lap session came to a close two hours later with light rain again filling the air. A brief track packing session was thwarted by continued precipitation and the call to cancel the days activity was made soonafter as rain began to inundate the speedway infield.
Eastern States action continues on Saturday morning with another combined round of practice for both Advance Auto Parts Big-Block and 358-Modified racers as they get the first green flag at 9:00 am. WLR Construction 358-Modified Time Trials are slated to begin at 10am followed immediately by WLR Construction/Integra Shocks Big-Block Modified Time Trials, with the top-six locked in to front row starting positions for both divisions.
Qualifying race action follows for the Small-Block and Big-Block stars with the next 24 cars taken from the six heats lined up in each class. A 358-Mod consolation round comes next and the final Big-Block openings will be filled Sunday by last chance consolation round qualifiers prior to the 46th running of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Eastern States 200 Big-Block Modified Championship finale.
