Hearn Earns Eastern States 200 Modified Pole On Saturday At Orange County
Middletown, NY – October 20, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
The starting grid for the 46th edition of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Eastern States 200 Modified Championship neared completion on Saturday as 31 drivers made their way into the line-up for Sunday’s $20,000-to-win DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Big-Block finale at Orange County Fair Speedway.
All-time Orange County win leader Brett Hearn surprised no one on Saturday afternoon as he bested 79 open-wheel entries to win the WLR Construction/Integra Shocks Fast Time Award. On a sun-drenched day at the fairgrounds, opening round time trials locked in the first three rows for Sunday’s 200-lap main with Hearn sharing the front row with long-time ‘Hard Clay’ regular Bruce Kline.
Joining the top-6 from Saturday’s WLR Construction Time Trials which locked in pole-sitter Hearn, Kline, Danny Johnson, Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard and current Mr. DIRcar Modified points leader Tim Fuller, were Vic Coffey (guaranteed 7th after winning the Rite Aid 200 at Syracuse) and the top-four finishers in six qualifying heats. Mitch Gibbs, Stewart Friesen, Gary Tomkins, Ryan Phelps, Jerry Higbie and Jack Johnson copped the 10-lap heats with still nine more drivers coming from Sunday’s three consolation round qualifiers and provisionals filling the remainder of the 44-car field.
Hearn, who was the 61st car to tour the fast 5/8-miler among those 78 that took time, has now earned pole-position for the Eastern States 200 on 11 occasions. The Sussex , N.J. superstar is the three-time defending E-S Champion and of his eight career victories, three (2002, 1986, 1979) have been scored from the pole. The Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Kruger-WLR/TEO entry was 4/100ths of a second quicker than second-fast timer Kline, who was the 59th car to run under the clocks.
Eastern States Weekend activity continues on Sunday with DIRTcar Big-Block Modified consolation round qualifiers and the 46th running of the Eastern States 200 Modified Championship finale plus a full program of DIRTcar Pro Stock action,. Pit gates are slated to open at 8 am and grandstands at 9 o’clock followed by the popular Race Against Drugs Pit Party, 9:30-10:30 am.
