Brett ‘The Jet’ Hearn Flies To Top Of DIRTcar NorthEast Feature Win List

Weedsport, NY – October 254, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director

The 32nd season for DIRTcar Racing NorthEast competitors recently came to a close with 267 drivers scoring feature wins in Big-Block Modified, 358-Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock and Street Stock divisions at 36 different tracks. Ten drivers took checkered flags in both Big-Block and Small-Block Modified main events, with the total open-wheel/full-fender count totaling 772 in 2007.

Thirty-year veteran Brett Hearn led all DIRTcar NE winners in the headline Big-Block Modified division, posting 14 feature wins at seven tracks around the Northeast. Seven came in Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series competition en route to the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship. The ‘Jet’ last topped the BB win chart in 2002 and he remains DIRTcar’s all-time Modified winner with 508 (339 Big-Block, 169 Small-Block). In 2007 Advance Auto Parts Series star Danny Johnson claimed the inaugural Virginia Motor Speedway event and BRP Modified Tour mainstay Rex King won the first race staged at Eriez Speedway in Erie , Pa. , bringing the number of tracks to 77 hosting DIRTcar-sanctioned events since 1976.

Just once before there were three drivers tied atop of the season-ending DIRTcar 358-Modified feature win chart. In 2007, Hearn and the Canadian contingent of Pete Bicknell and Laurent Ladouceur from Ontario and David Hebert and Yan Bussiere from Quebec created a log-jam with each Small-Block standout reaching victory lane on seven occasions. Bicknell remains DIRTcar NorthEast’s all-time 358-Modified win leader with 190 now in the recordbook. Autodrome Drummond titlist Mario Clair won five times this year en route to the overall Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship.

Tight competition was also witnessed in the DIRTcar Sportsman ranks with Ransomville champion Don Spatorico, Genesee points king Rob Pratt and top Finger Lakes Region runner Todd Henderson each racking up a dozen wins. Utilizing a mix of open and crate motors, 81 drivers shared the spotlight in 222 main events held at 15 tracks, with 15 year-old Larry Wight picking up the division’s top rookie award. Among his nine wins, Joe Williams scored a record seven tour triumphs in his march to the coveted overall Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series points crown.

For the third straight season, Western New York Pro Stock pilot Pete Stefanski paced the full-fender field and was also successful in his overall Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series title defense. Not only did ’07 Genesee champion Stefanski lead the DIRTcar NorthEast circuit, the Wheatfield, N.Y. chauffeur finished his 2007 campaign as the winningest driver in the UMP Sportsman division with 17 first-place trophies.

For the second year in succession, Dave Mannise led the UMP/DIRTcar Street Stock division by scoring 12 feature wins. While doubling the total of his nearest competiton last season, this time around Mannise was matched in double-digits by Canandaigua high-point man Mike Welch with 11 while Nathan Peckham totaled a career-best seven. First-ever Caprara Bros. Outdoor Toy Store Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Super Series champion Scott Smith collected three checkered flags, two of which came in tour competition.
