DAVEY SAMMONS WINS URC BAR'S LEAKS SPRINT SERIES SEASON FINALE SATURDAY
NIGHT AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
It was a season of twenty-eight events with no rain outs but the 2007
60th Anniversary URC BAR'S Leaks Sprint Series came to a successful
close at Davey Sammons of Bordentown, NJ won the twenty-five lap
feature event at the Delaware International Speedway. This event, which
is part of the Taylor & Messick Delaware State Sprint Series was a real
thrill as Randy West led the first twenty-two laps. But a restart on
lap twenty-three opened the door for Davey Sammons (URC's 2006 Rookie
of the Year) who made a bold outside pass to lead the final two laps and
collect $2,000 for his efforts. To top the night off for Sammons, he
also earned the LikeWise Construction Fast Time Award for turning the
fastest lap in the URC feature event.
Three heat races were presented to determined the starting line-up for
the URC feature with Randy West, Jamie Bodo and Josh Weller winning the
qualifying events.
In the feature, Randy West earned the pole starting position by winning
the opening heat race of the night. At the drop of the green flag, West
bolted to a commanding lead as Jamie Bodo and Gary Gollub were in the
chase. On a charge was the youthful Sammons who was racing in third by
lap two. Sammons passed Bodo for second on lap four and now began the
task of chasing down West. Also on a strong run was Becca Anderson
driving the BAR'S Leaks #17 sprint car, now running fourth just ahead of
Kramer Williamson.
As the field completed the halfway point of the race, the caution flag
was displayed with Mike Kostic and Jamie Bobo tangled in turn two. On
the restart, West was on point with Sammons close in the chase followed
by Anderson, Michael Carber and Williamson. West again ran to hide from
the rest of the field, but this time, he remained within the sights of a
determined Davey Sammons. With each lap, Sammons moved in a bit closer
to the leader. With just five laps remaining, West, Sammons, Anderson,
Carber and Williamson were the top five.
The final caution of the night was displayed on laps twenty-two for Adam
Gordon who stopped on the speedway. On the restart, West covered the
low groove giving Sammons the only option, to go high. The door was
open and Sammons took the high road on a very slick but smooth racing
surface. West and Sammons ran side-by-side down the backstretch and
through turns three and four. Coming out of turn four, Sammons took
the lead and the two-to-go sign with Randy West now in the runner-up
spot followed by Becca Anderson.
Sammons mastered a flawless run for the final two laps to score his
first career URC BAR'S Leaks Sprint Series feature event. Sammons also
became URC's twentieth different driver in twenty-eight events to win a
feature this season. Randy West finished second followed by Becca
Anderson, Michael Carber and Kramer Williamson.
At the conclusion of the night, Curt Michael along with car owners Pat
and Kathy Palladino visited victory lane and celebrated winning the
prestigious URC BAR'S Leaks Championship title of 2007.
The URC Fred's Trailer Parts Hard Charger Award went to Ed Aikin who
advanced nine positions in the feature event.
