Painesville Speedway kicks off its 50th
season as the first track in Ohio to feature IMCA’s Karl Chevrolet
Northern SportMod division.
Saturday point races for the sanctioned class start April 12 and run
through Sept. 20 at the 1/5-mile paved oval.
“We realize how expensive it is for drivers to compete on a weekly
basis and for economic reasons, we kept coming back to the IMCA
concept that focuses on affordability,” said fourth year promoter
Jason Bateman. “This class makes it possible for more drivers to
compete, not just the guys with the deepest pockets.”
“This is very much a family-oriented track. The area does not support
a high-dollar car or high gate price,” he added. “Northern SportMods
are flashy and they’re fast. From an entertainment standpoint,
they’re perfect. They hit the mark all the way around.”
Painesville has already opened to a well-attended winter series that
continues into March. The pit entrance has already been changed, with
the installation of a new video system and upgrading of the sound
system on both sides of the track planned before the official start
to the season this spring.
A second figure-8 camper pull race has been added to the schedule,
with a two-day ‘Blow-Out’ special set to end the golden anniversary
season.
Painesville is the second paved facility to add Northern SportMods
this season, joining Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie Speedway on the roster
of newly-sanctioned tracks.
