Fonda Speedway Looks Back At 2007

FONDA , NY – The 2007 racing season was the 56th championship season of competition at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway. Considering all of the rainouts and the flooding that occurred in 2006, 2007 was a different story as it was one of the best seasons that the Montgomery County Fairgrounds 1/2 mile oval has ever seen weather-wise.

“What a difference a year makes as last year (2006) we lost nine events to rain while this year we only lost one,” promoter Ric Lucia said back in November at the annual awards banquet. “Wherever Fonda Speedway drivers travel to race statistically they always run well. I feel that we have one of the best groups of drivers in the Northeast and in New York State . I feel that the sport of racing in Fonda isn’t going anywhere and that we should all quit worrying about where we’ve been, look at where we are and work together to keep Fonda Speedway successful.”

In the Modified division, 22 feature events were held with a total of eight different drivers winning those events led by Matt DeLorenzo with nine feature event wins. Bobby Varin was next with five wins followed by Ryan Odasz with three wins while Danny Johnson, Craig Hanson, Ronnie Johnson, Mike Fusco, and Dave Camara all had one win apiece.

There were no first time winners in the Modified division at Fonda this season.

DeLorenzo was crowned the overall Modified Track Champion for the first time in his career after winning the 358-Modified title at Fonda back in 2004 and 2006.

There were 21 feature events held in the Sportsman division with a total of 10 different drivers winning those events. The division was totally dominated by David Towns who had a total of 10 feature wins while John McAuliffe and John Scarborough both had two wins apiece. Single event wins were captured by Dave Constantino, Mark Mortensen, Jeremy Wilder, Luke Munroe, Robert Perry, Danny Varin, and Mark Kislowski.

Constantino, Wilder, Munroe, and Varin were all first time winners in the Sportsman division this season.

Towns was crowned the 2007 Sportsman Track Champion at Fonda for the first time in his career.

In the 21 feature events held in the Pro Stock division there were six different winners led by Kenny Martin Jr. who had six feature wins. Kenny Gates was next with five wins while Nick Stone followed close behind with four victories. Roy Fifield, Rob Yetman, and Chip Smith all had two wins apiece.

Yetman was the only first time winner in the division in his first full season at Fonda.

Gates and Yetman were crowned Co-Track Champions in the Pro Stock division with the title being the second one for Gates (won his first title back in 2004) while for Yetman it was his first ever title at Fonda.

In the 19 total IMCA feature events held at the Track of Champions this season there were seven different drivers who visited victory lane with Jeremy Cramer leading the way with six feature wins. Danny Ballard was next with four wins followed by Kevin Buff and George Catanzano with three wins apiece, Danny Ody, Aaron Jacobs, and Jim Cramer all with single event wins.

Jim Cramer (Jeremy’s brother) was the only first time winner in the division in 2007.

Jeremy Cramer was crowned the 2007 Track Champion in the division for the first time in his career.

Rocky Warner dominated the Street Stock division at Fonda this season which saw a total of 27 feature events and a total of eight different drivers winning those events. Warner had nine feature wins on the way to his second Track Championship after being co-champion with John Bradt back in 2005.

Following behind Warner in feature victories were Dave Horning Sr., Dave Horning Jr., and John Babcock with four wins apiece; Chuck McSpirit and Rob VanAernam with two wins each; Luke Horning and Duke McSpirit each had one win apiece.

For both Chuck and Duke McSpirit it was their first career wins at Fonda.
