Power Rankings Week 1

Column by Mike Mallett, National Editor of Dirt Track Digest

Much like you can get on foxsports.com or cnnsi.com for the various sports, in 2008 I’m going to do my best to come out with a bi-weekly version of my own Modified power rankings. Each few weeks I’ll look over results from the various speedways as well as the Super DIRTcar Series and Dart Dirt Race of Champions events to rate drivers based on wins and prize money. Here is addition number one of my power rankings.

1. Brett Hearn (Best: 1, Worst: 1) – won almost $81,000 on the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar series and was the series champion worth $60,000. He was also the Northeast top winner in all divisions.

2. Tim Fuller (Best: 2, Worst: 2) – Although Fuller is set to compete on a limited schedule in 2008, had he not had engine problems at Eastern States he would have been the overall champion. In 2007 he earned $74,000 while on tour plus bonuses at the season ending awards banquet.

3. Jimmy Phelps (Best: 3, Worst: 3) – Phelps finished fourth in the overall Mr. DIRTcar Championship points behind Billy Decker but he secured the DIRTcar Central Region title, Rolling Wheels Raceway title, Fulton Speedway title and the Cayuga County Speedway title. He scored a total of 10 wins in 2007.

4. Billy Decker (Best: 4, Worst: 4) – Decker had as many wins as Phelps but not the track titles. He picked up $55,000 when all was said and done on tour. Decker also won the Victoria 200 at Fulton Speedway.

5. Pat Ward (Best: 5, Worst: 5) – Decker’s teammate, he picked up the Race of Champions South Region title as well as the overall RoC Dart Dirt series title beating out Ronnie Johnson and Stewart Friesen.

6. Matt Sheppard (Best: 6, Worst: 6) – Sheppard finished eighth in the Mr. DIRTcar standings and had a spectacular season at New Egypt Speedway in picking up the track title as well as seven feature victories.

7. Kenny Tremont Jr. (Best: 7, Worst: 7) – Tremont was the winningst Small-Block Modified driver of 2007 en route to winning track titles at Albany-Saratoga Speedway and Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Should be tough to beat again in 2008.

8. Steve Paine (Best: 8, Worst: 8) – Paine dominated Canandaigua Speedway in 2007 and finished fifth in the points on the Super DIRTcar Series. Paine also had a wins at Black Rock Speedway.

9. Gary Tomkins (Best: 9, Worst: 9) – Tomkins had a less than stellar season on the tour as he finished ninth in the points and made only $26,000. But one has to account for his good runs in Australia running at tracks he’s never been to before and the fact that he won a race while there

10. Stewart Friesen (Best: 10, Worst 10) – Friesen won $10,000 at the New Yorker at Utica-Rome Speedway and the Utica-Rome Speedway Championship worth $8,000. He also won the Southern Tier 100 at Five Mile Point Speedway.

Other drivers receiving consideration this week include Danny Johnson, Matt Delorenzo, Dale Planck, Jeff Strunk and Ronnie Johnson in no particular order.

DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway will change these rankings significantly as many drivers currently on the list may not be making the trip south to Florida.
