Moyer Bags UMP Late Models Event at Volusia

The man they call ‘Mr. Smooth’ had a night a pure perfection. Billy Moyer had fast time in his group, dominated his heat, and dominated the 30 lap main event to take home the $7,000 top prize. The Batesville, Arkansas National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer pulled out to a huge lead from the green flag and held as much as a full straightaway lead before numerous cautions pulled the rest of the field close.

“You know…we have been tweaking on things all night long and trying to watch the racetrack,” Moyer claimed in victory lane. “I guess right now we’re doing everything right! The only changes we made were some shock changes. The track was a little rougher than usual and we went with a different shock deal just to try to keep up with the holes.”

The youngster from Shinnston, West Virginia, Josh ‘Kid Rocket’ Richards took the second position away from fellow World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular, Shane Clanton. Clanton did not make it easy on Richards as he tried lap after lap to get past the Locust Grove, Georgia pilot. Richard finally made the pass on the tenth circuit using the high side. Clanton fell into some misfortune later in the race as he spun his Rocket Chassis on lap 19.

The ensuing restart sent Moyer out to another large lead with Richards in tow. Tim McCreadie was in a heavy battle top five with Justin Ratliff until the two got together coming out of turn four. The contact between the two caused McCreadie to lose all of his momentum and fall deep into the pack. Ratliff, one the other hand, had a solid top three run going until his Mastersbuilt Chassis came up lame on lap 23 sending him pitside. McCreadie continued his assault after falling back as far as 12th and fought his way back up to fifth in the final rundown.

With two laps to go Moyer had about a half of a straightaway lead and caught a three car battle at the tail of the field. Moyer stayed ‘smooth’ as usual and held off the hard charging Richards by five car lengths to pick up his second win of the Alltel DirtCar Nationals and fifth A-Main win of the Florida swing. Clint Smith followed Richards home in third with Francis fourth and McCreadie rounding out the top five.
