‘Kid Rocket’ Josh Richards opened his 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season with a win at Volusia Speedway Park. 2008 wasn’t much different as he held off a late charge from two time 2008 Volusia winner Billy Moyer after a lap 46 caution to claim the first leg of the 2008 WoO season.
Shane Clanton and Tim Fuller led the field to the green with Clanton shooting out to the lead. Clanton seemed to have control of the event through the first caution filled 15 laps. Clanton then had to battle Jimmy Owens and Richards. The three racers were three wide at one point with Clanton holding on to the lead. Richards was finally able to find a way past the ‘Newport Nightmare’ on the 28th circuit to take second and set his sights on the race leader. Clanton was in control until lap 31 when his Rocket Chassis came up lame in turn 2 handing the lead to Richards.
As the laps wound down, Billy Moyer made his way into 2nd on lap 43 and had one bad fast hot rod. Josh had a comfortable straightaway lead until a lap 46 caution for ‘Chubzilla’ Chub Frank who came to a stop in turn two.
The single file restart had Richards leading Moyer, Eckert (form 24th) and Owens. Richards got the jump as Eckert got beside the red hot Moyer and made the pass on lap 48. Richards held on to for the win with Eckert finishing second after a dismal 2007 season. Moyer came home third with Steve Francis holding on for fourth and Shannon Babb rounding out the top 5.
