IMCA open-wheel modifieds racing in 2008 at Volunteer Speedway.

IMCA open-wheel modifieds racing in 2008 at Volunteer Speedway.

BULLS GAP, Tenn. — After hearing from competitors gauging their interest regarding Volunteer Speedway running open-wheel modifieds in 2008, under International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) sanctioning/rules ... the decision has been made. "The Gap" will be bringing back open-wheel modified racing in 2008.

In talking with IMCA, at least for the 2008 racing season they are willing to work with Volunteer Speedway and the competitors' to allow any UMP-legal chassis to compete. However, the rules the class will follow will be strictly IMCA, thus meaning quick-change rearends will not be permitted. Otherwise, really any UMP-legal open-wheel modified in the East Tennessee region would be able to race. Also, the sanctioning body is going to work with race teams regarding engine rules for 2008. The class will run IMCA-legal tires (one-compound), too.

Stay tuned to the Volunteer Speedway Web site at www.volunteerspeedway.com for more information to be released regarding the IMCA-sanctioned open-wheel modifieds. But all East Tennessee (plus neighboring states of North Carolina and Kentucky) race teams, be preparing for your return to racing at Volunteer Speedway. It's very important that race teams show up in good numbers to support the decision to revive open-wheel modified racing at "The Gap."

To learn more about IMCA, visit their official Web site at www.imca.com and look in the open-wheel modified section.

Weather permitting an open practice day will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23. Stay tuned to the Web site for further information closer to Feb. 23.

Five classes will be racing weekly in 2008 at Volunteer Speedway: Super Late Model, Crate Late Model (Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned), IMCA Open Wheel Modified, Hobby Stock and Mini Stock. What promises to be another exciting racing season (with several special events on the schedule) will open Feb. 29-March 1 with the running of the Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series $10,000-to-win 10th Annual Spring Thaw 100.

The exciting World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, featuring defending and two-time series champion Donny Schatz, Joey Saldana, Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski, Jason Meyers, Daryn Pittman, Kraig Kinser, Jac Haudenschild, Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl, Shane Stewart, plus many other top names in sprint car racing from around the country, will be in action on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 during Bristol Motor Speedway NASCAR weekend.
