Williams Grove postpones season opener.

WILLIAMS GROVE OPENER POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY MARCH 9

MECHANICSBURG, PA -- The sprint car races scheduled for March 2 at
Williams Grove Speedway were canceled with Sunday afternoon, March 9,
set as the new opening day for the 2008 racing season.
The cancellation announcement came shortly after 9:00 Sunday morning.
With temperatures dipping into the mid 20s Saturday night, the
racing surface was frozen solid on Sunday morning. By 9:00 the
temperature was 29 degrees with a wind chill in the low 20s.
Despite the fact that a beautiful, sunny afternoon was in store
with temperatures expected to rise to near 50, the decision to cancel
had to be made.
"I am extremely disappointed," said Williams Grove's general
manager Justin Loh. "Because of the volume of calls we received
throughout the week, we were expecting a large turnout of fans and
racers for Sunday's opener. However, because of track conditions on
Sunday morning we were forced to postpone the opener again."
Because of the condition of the racing surface, the 2:00 starting
time would have been delayed considerably and even with a later start
the likelihood of competitive racing would have been doubtful.
"Williams Grove has established high standards over the years and
we did not feel we could meet those standards on Sunday," Loh said.
"Rather than subject everyone to a long afternoon and follow-the-leader
racing, we felt it was in the best interests of our fans and our racers
to move the opener to March 9."
Sunday marked the second time in succession that Williams Grove has
been foiled by winter weather. A weekend storm ended any hope of
opening the season on February 24 as originally planned.
Sprint cas racing will be the sole attraction on March 9.
March 16 will be the final Sunday afternoon program before the
speedway switches to its Friday night schedule on March 21.
