For Immediate Release - March 11, 2008 - From Jim Irvine - Merrittville Public Relations - 905-685-7223 (Winter Office)
Thorold, Ontario (March 11) – With Merrittville Speedway’s Baron Roofing Spring Sizzler 100 - 46 days away and counting down – the DIRT Weekly Racing Series Race Teams and those from across the DIRTcar circuit are putting the finishing touches to their machines. So too are those that race Tuesday Nights on the infield Kart Track at the Thorold facility.
When the Spring Series opens for 2008 in just 7 weeks – PartSource will bring a 7th division to the Kart Weekly Racing Series lineup.
“We’re looking forward to developing the new division,” reveals PartSource St. Catharines’ Jeff Riley, “between our location and our newest in Niagara Falls … we have a love of the sport … as do the racers in this fun-based division new to Merrittville.”
Merrittville Speedway’s infield oval and other tracks before it – the Virgil Kart Club and Bieda’s have produced current Saturday Night home town heroes such as Lampman, Steele, Cunningham, Wood, Bicknell, D’Ilario, Chevalier, Williamson, Bleich, McPherson, Willard, Bowman, Braun, Robins, Klager, Tallman, Mastroianni, and Leslie.
Saturday Nights will continue to be their focus but the PartSource Masters Division may return other former karters from the area and even bring fathers or other relatives of current Tuesday Nighters to the sport themselves – much the same way as the recreational leagues cater to former stick and ball enthusiasts.
“Merrittville fans and racers have become great PartSource customers,” prided Riley, “we are happy to support the Kart Club and contribute to its continued growth.”
Saturday Night Race Fans will also see PartSource helping out one of Merrittville’s newest second generation drivers – Andrew Sittler as he joins one of the largest Rookie Crops in the history of the L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modified Division – in a #37s made famous by his father Harry before him.
Coincidentally, when the Spring Sizzler 100 Count Down reaches 37 to go – readers can look forward to learning about the younger Sittler’s move to the 358s after spending last season in the Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lites.
Away from Merrittville, PartSource annually presents the Monster Jam Events at Copps Coliseum and the Rogers Centre during the winter months.
As a test, the November Event in Hamilton provided a number of Merrittville Speedway’s Karters with a unique experience – racing indoors in both events.
Before the likes of Grave Digger and other fan favorites chewed up the dirt surface much like the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs eat up their competition on the ice – PartSource’s Riley staged Kart Demonstration Races – proudly waving Saturday Night Starter Doug Leonard’s borrowed flags himself.
“It was quite an experience for them,” remembered Riley, “to race on such a unique track … in front such a huge crowd and the whole time … the Monster Truck drivers treated them like royalty.”
Joining the PartSource Masters Division in 2008 are long-time sponsors and divisions – the Drummond Home Hardware Garden City Auto Complex Novice 1 and 5 Original Pizza Log Divisions – the KC Auto Parts Novice 2, RCM Racing Equipment Cassell Manufacturing Junior 1, Ed MacPherson Construction Junior 2, Superior PetroFuels Junior Restricted Heavy and the Philbrick Farm & Garden Stock Medium.
Drivers interested in the PartSource Masters Division should be minimum 30 years of age. The new division will follow rules like the other divisions as outlined in the Merrittville Speedway 2008 Kart Rule Book in addition to WKA specifications.
“In general for this year,” adds former Kart Racer now Kart Race Director and ’07 Lucas Oil Open Wheel Lite Saturday Night Champion Paul Klager, “we are looking for drivers and teams to treat each other with the same respect that they would like to be treated with and first and foremost to have some fun … and that starts with the new division!”
