ESS EXTRA!!
We would like to welcome you to a 15 part story. The 25th Anniversary Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS) is ready to take on a dirt track near you! Starting on April 12th right through ‘til October 18th. We are going to visit each track that the stars and cars from ESS will visit, some 15 total. Bring you the in and outs of each facility in hopes of making your trip just a bit easier as the new season gets closer.
We will bring you two tracks a week from Black Rock to Rolling Wheels and each one in between. The fun part of being a traveling organization is visiting different places, meeting different people, experiencing different cultures and seeing many different sites…come aboard for the ride!!
The Black Rock Speedway, Dundee, New York.
This fast oval located just south of the small hamlet of Dundee, NY on Rte. 14A has been a mainstay on the ESS circuit for over two decades. Sixty events total have been run since the first event on August 3rd, 1984. But 2008 brings back a bit of nostalgia as ESS will open its season at the Yates County oval.
From 1996-2003, the goal was to have the new season open up at Black Rock (also known as Dundee Raceway Park). Big crowds were the norm and hopefully this season will spark some old magic. While Steve Wetmore and Lin Hough have booked many an ESS event, this will be the first full point show under the ownership of Dean and Alex Hoag.
Local drivers of interest are two-time ESS champion Lance Yonge from nearby Penn Yan, Stanley’s Bubby Kerrick and Rock Stream’s Tim Kelly. Yonge has been both a big block and small block champion back in the late 80’s, early 90’s with Kerrick a standout in the street stock ranks for many years. Kelly has been an ESS victor at his home track.
The track is 4/10ths in length, semi-back and with its circular layout carries a lot of speed. It isn’t uncommon for the ESS stars to “Flat Foot” it around the entire oval which keeps the fans in awe. Bleachers cover the entire front stretch with the last set towards turn one under a roof. The pits are located off the back stretch with seating available there also. The Sponsor tower is on the front with VIP Suites behind the backstretch bleachers.
The date is April 12th where the 25th Anniversary sponsored by Lucas Oil kicks off at Black Rock. Fans also should note that a special practice session will be held the night before with free admission to the grandstands.
