MR. EXCITEMENT FAVORITE FOR EARLIEST GROVE NIGHT RACE
MECHANICSBURG, PA -- The earliest night race in the storied history
of Williams Grove Speedway is scheduled for Friday, March 21.
Sprint cars and limited (358 c.i.) sprints will be on the card and
the first heat is scheduled to start at 7:30.
While night racing in March is nothing new at the Grove - it's
happened on four previous occasions and as recently as last year - March
21 is the earliest a night race has ever been scheduled.
Last year's scheduled Friday night opener was rained out on March
23 and reset for Sunday, March 25. Mike Erdley was the winner of the
25-lap sprint car feature.
Williams Grove also raced on the night of March 25 in 2005 with the
main event won by Todd Shaffer.
If past history has anything to do with naming a pre-race favorite
this week, Shaffer would certainly be the man.
The defending Cindy Rowe Auto Glass champion always seems to be
ready for night racing at Williams Grove. He has won four of the past
twelve opening night races including two of the last three.
Shaffer is a two-time track champion, who owns 34 career victories
at Williams Grove, and is currently just two behind Hall of Famer Bobby
Allen for tenth-place on the career win list.
March 21 will also be the season's first appearance by the 358s
sponsored this season by Bass Pro Shops of Harrisburg.
Pat Cannon won the limited sprint opener last year, then went on to
win the division's championship. He will be back to defend his title
this season.
Williams Grove will close the month of March with two nights of
racing on Friday, the 28th, and Saturday, the 29th.
Sprints and late models will be on tap for the 28th, while super
sportsman cars will headline the Saturday Night Series opener on the 29th.
