Any time you get the chance to head down to Central Pennsylvania for a big weekend of racing for the 410 Sprint Cars you can’t go wrong. Over 30 cars checked in for racing action at Williams Grove Speedway (35) on Friday night and again on Saturday at Lincoln Speedway (34).
Like the old days, here are my fast fifteen facts from the weekend:
1. Five World of Outlaw drivers made the two in Pennsylvania for the weekend. Craig Dollansky won Friday night at Williams Grove and finished fourth on Saturday. Joey Saldana took home second place finish and a 16th. Lucas Wolfe was 12th and 10th respectively. Chad Kemenah had a not so stellar weekend with a 20th and 18th. Tony Bruce Jr. finished 17th Friday but he was unable to qualify on Saturday.
2. The All-Star Circuit of Champions was represented by former Pa. resident Brian Paulus and new All-Star Lance Dewease.
3. Kasey Kahne was the talk of the town over the weekend as he entered into competition both nights. Friday night he finished 14th but on Saturday things didn’t go his way. Kahne’s no.91 didn’t handle like it needed to and he did not qualify. He was given a promoter’s provisional but he opted not to use it. He did not want to cause a risk to others.
4. Rick Lafferty was running second when something apparently broke on his ride sending him into the front-stretch wall at Lincoln Saturday. The car was heavily damaged but he was alright.
5. Chris Meleason had the most spectacular crash of the weekend on Friday night. Meleason hit the wall just off of turn four at the Grove and landed beyond the flag stand. He flipped end over end at least six times, maybe more.
6. Ryan Bohlke also got upside in the consolation event after he and Mark Smith came together. After the incident, Bohlke had a brief discussion with Smith as he walked back to his racecar trailer.
7. Smith was also involved in an incident on Saturday night when he made contact with the lap car of John Westbrook. Westbrook flipped and brought out the third red flag of the race.
8. Greg Hodnett’s win on Saturday night was his first of the 2008 racing season for Jim and Sandy Kline. Bet it’s nice to get that monkey off his back.
9. Kemenah had some tough luck on the opening lap at Lincoln Speedway when he got together with Cody Darrah and flipped lightly over without damaging anything but the front end. He continued but didn’t complete the feature.
10. Pat Cannon did double duty on Friday night in the 358 and 410 Sprint. He plans to enter several 410 races this season when it doesn’t conflict with his 358 schedule. (see my AARN column for more on this)
11. Dave Calaman was not happy about finishing second in the 358 race on Friday night. In his words, “he chopped me,” referring to the fact that Cannon came down on him in turn one. The two came together on the final lap. They both continued with Cannon getting the winning.
12. Aaron Ott, who is only 15-years-old, finished third in the 358 feature on Friday and came back Saturday to qualify for the main-event at Lincoln. He had a brake fail forcing him pit-side early in the event.
13. Whether you like Fred Rahmer or not, watching him race at Lincoln Speedway is very entertaining. Rahmer started 20th in the feature after barely qualifying through his heat race. He worked his way to the front and scored a fifth place finish. Simply impressive.
14. New York had a lone representative make the field on Friday night, Craig Keel.
15. For the record, Hagerstown, Selinsgove and Port Royal all cancelled Saturday’s racing program. The weather was cold but the rain and snow never hit Lincoln. Kudos to Pa racing fans because Lincoln had over 1,000 people in the stands. A lot of Kasey Kahne fans.
