Foley preparing to defend Airborne Modified Title

Posted by Tom Ames | 04/01/08

For Immediate Release AS-033008-1

SARANAC LAKE, NY – Last fall George Foley of Saranac Lake scored a career first – the Airborne Speedway Ernie’s Tools Modified championship. As the start of the 2008 season nears, Foley reports he’s eager to begin his title defense. A New York State Transportation Department employee who works on snow plows, Foley says, “I tired of winter weeks ago. I’m ready to go racing.”

“The car has been painted and lettered and I just received my Pat Morrison motor back from the shop,” reports Foley. “They found it had a cracked piston and that I had knocked the oil pump pickup off during my last wreck. I’m happy now that I wasn’t able to get back out there and try to finish the last race, I would have finished the motor.”

Foley says his DIRTcar Modified No.34 will retain its’ predominantly white color scheme, but with some added green. “I know some say green can be unlucky, but my sponsors include Laidman Lawn Care, Wesley Moody Landscaping, Pulsifer Logging and Shamrock Bar & Grill and they’re all for it, we’ll see how it goes,” Foley says. Winning a track title doesn’t hurt when it comes to sponsorships. Foley receives additional support from Egglefield Ford of Elizabethtown, Kim’s Karpets, Loreman’s Screen Printing & Embroidery and Northern Sanitation.

“I’m going to do my best to repeat as the champion, but I want to be more competitive every week,” Foley claims. “Last year, I won two races and kind of fell into the title when Patrick (Dupree) missed some races. This year, I’d like to drive around more people and win more races, but if you said I could be second every week and win another championship, I’d take it. I’m hearing that more Canadian teams are headed to Airborne this year and there were some good ones there last year.”

“There’s a new gear rule this year,” Foley notes. “I think it will close up the field. I was turning 8200 rpm at times last year, which is a good testament to the motor, but now the car’s going to have to handle better.”

Foley’s brother Tom will head up a crew that includes George Ohler, Colby Pulsifer, brother Bill Foley, Dave Whitson and Tom Peria. The Foley mount will be on hand at the Champlain Valley Motorsports Show at the Crete Civic Center in Plattsburgh Friday evening April 4 and Saturday, April 5 from 10 am – 8 pm.

Airborne Speedway begins its 57th season Saturday, May 10 at 5 p.m. with a five-division

race card presented by Econo Lodge highlighted by an Ernie's Tools Modified 50-lap main event.

Saturday, May 17, the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model Tour visits Airborne for the Furniture World of Vermont Spring Green 100. Airborne weekly divisions will also be in action.
