ESS EXTRA!!
The Mohawk International Raceway, Hogansburg, New York.
The ultra-fast half-mile that sits right down on the Akwesasne Indian Reservation (The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe) has come a long ways since being built by the two hands of Dennis White in the mid-80’s. Known since its opening day as the Frogtown International Speedway is now going through a name change and new image as the Mohawk International Raceway.
Jody Swamp is promoter and also owner with a group of investors that has a solid three year plan to take the track near Massena. N.Y. to the next level. The oval boasts a tacky surface with a circular shape which sees speeds of the sprint cars well over 100 M.P.H. The speed plant attracts fans from Canada as well as the States as it sites a very short distance from the border. You can actually see the International Bridge from the grandstands.
The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints will be making two appearances to Mohawk Int’l in 2008 with both events paying $2,000 to win sponsored by SUNY Canton.. A new June date has been set up to free up the month of July for the track to host it’s first ever Lucas Oil Series for 358 modifieds. The second date will bring down the full point season as it did last year with the crowning of the new champion. The late September event drew ESS largest field of sprints for the 2007 season.
Drivers of local interest are Brian McDonald, who lives right across the St. Lawrence, Jeff Cook is from Antwerp where Mohawk is one of the closest tracks to his home and the host of all Canadian drivers that will be represented.
The grandstand runs the entire length of the front stretch with a large VIP, Officials tower with dozens of rooms stretching almost the entire length. Concessions and bathrooms are underneath the grandstand with the pits located off of turn four giving and unobstructed view of the entire track. Fans should also note that a new website has been launched as well.
