CLEARFIELD, PA – First there was a new owner and now there is new clay that is changing the entire look of Central PA Speedway near Clearfield.
The speedway changed ownership in February with Dan Russell and Tim Bainey finalizing the deal for Mr. Bainey to assume ownership of the speedway, it became effective the week of Feb. 14.
When he purchased the track, six to eight inches’ of snow was covering the speedway grounds and new clay wasn’t being considered until next season, but then a local coal company found some clay, and now things are taking a different turn.
“I got a call that George Cowfer came across some clay,” Mr. Bainey said. “Kenny (McLaughlin, general manager/competition director) and I went to check it out, and it looks like pretty good clay.”
Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is hauling the clay, from the George Cowfer Contracting job in Osceola Mills. Dwayne Brooks of Brooks Services, L.L.C. is spreading the clay on the surface.
Mr. Brooks said the clay would be at least 8 to10 inches thick the whole way around the 3/8-mile oval.
Approximately 120 to 125 truck loads of clay is what Mr. Bainey said Mr. McLaughlin believes will be needed to cover the track.
“When we found the clay last week, it was raining so we couldn’t do anything,” Mr. Bainey said. “The weather’s great today.”
Mr. Bainey is hoping the work is done by the end of the week.
The first race is scheduled for the Memorial Day Weekend, as the UFO Late Models makes its initial visit to the mountain top oval, and Mr. Bainey anticipates the clay being ready way before then.
Since the take over, Mr. Bainey said he’s had a lot of support as he prepares for his maiden voyage as a track owner. He said many of the previous staff have did what was asked, they have called either him or Mr. McLaughlin and many of them are returning to their previous posts.
