Sharon Springs, NY- Bobby Varin Rallies At Fonda For Strong Fourth Place Finish; Danny Varin 14th In Initial Mod Run
by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

New York Modified star Bobby Varin raced from his 11th place starting spot last Saturday at the Fonda Fairgrounds opening "Ice Jam" event to finish in fourth place when the checkered flag fell after a hard-fought 40-lap feature event. Varin, who was mired deep in a group of quality race cars, was finally able to break free at the three-quarter mark of the race and closed the distance on the leaders but ran out of laps on the hard and slick race track. Varin was behind the wheel of the Nancy & Jake Spraker owned 1J Bicknell Chassied/JPM Powered Big Block racer as he began his quest to earn a fourth Fonda title this year.

Varin was third in his heat after starting in sixth place. With the great field of race cars on hand for the opening day event, four heats were necessary to select the starting field with the top four in each heat moving on to the feature event and the top three redrawing for the feature. As luck would have it, someone drew for Varin and his starting position was 11th when the green flag fell to start the feature. The track was hard and slick and kept passing at a minimum, but lap after lap the three time champion kept working at finding the sweet spot on the track that would enable him to make a run at the leaders. Varin made a good run and settled for fourth in the opening day event that was won by current track champion Matt DeLorenzo with Brett Hearn, the early leader in the event finishing second. Ryan Odasz, who started the race from the pole, finished third with Varin fourth and Jeff Trombley completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Ronnie Johnson, Pat Ward, Dave Camara, Donnie Corellis, and Elmo Reckner.

The opening event proved to provide special significance for the Varin Family as Danny Varin took his maiden voyage in the Modified ranks aboard the Ed Monger owned Magsarus numbered 93 car. At the start of his heat event, Danny lost some early ground due to a bit of bumping and banging but rallied to finish in fifth place, one out of qualifying. Danny put the car into the feature event with a solid drive in the consi, finishing in the runnerup slot. Starting the feature event from 20th position, Danny showed remarkable patience and took his time early on during the race. Once Danny was able to move to the outside line, he pulled off a couple of outstanding passes to move to his finishing fourteenth place when the checkered flag fell, a great start in the Modified ranks for the talented teenager.

Bobby Varin has claimed the Modified title at Fonda three times during his career. He captured his first Fonda Modified title in 2000, and earned back to back titles in 2005 and 2006. Last year Varin fell just 36-points shy in capturing another title, losing out to small block proponent Matt Delorenzo. Varin won five times during the 2007 Fonda season, a season which saw him rack-up two wins in large paying events at mid-season, and then had a couple of lower finishes that enabled DeLorenzo to forge ahead down the stretch. Varin hopes to keep pace with the defending champion DeLorenzo early on as he would like nothing better than lay claim to his fourth title at the famed fairgrounds race track.

The Varin team will be back in action this coming weekend at the Fonda track, where another full card of racing is offered beginning at 4 PM.

The Varins will also be taking their Sunday night racing to the Utica Rome Speedway. This weekend the Utca Rome facility will host practice for the Modified division while offering a full card of racing events to the spectators. Bobby Varin will be once again be handling the driving chores of the Dave Cruickshank owned signature numbered 00 at Utica Rome and the 17 year old Danny will be back in the Charles Tibbitts owned numbered 18, fitted with one of the Varin's 358 motors for his assault on the Modified division.

Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support during the 2007 season and hope for continued support into the 2008 racing season. More updates will follow for the Varin Racing team efforts.
