KIRKWOOD, NY...Five Mile Point Speedway is ready to swing open its gates for the 58th consecutive season opening event this Saturday, April 26th. The T3 358 Modified Series will compete in a special 40 lap event along with complete point races for the Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Lightning Cats and Figure 8 division. Race time is 6 p.m.
Historically, opening day in the Modified division at Five Mile Point Speedway has often been a gauge on the forthcoming season. Former stars from the past like Dave Kneisel, Chuck Akulis, Bernie Griffin and Doug Worthing all parlayed opening day victories in to solid season long efforts. Last season Stewart Friesen won the opening day event at the quarter mile and went on for a total of six feature wins which included the prestigious Heath Memorial and Southern Tier 100 events. Who will get the jump in 2008?
The off-season excitement has been building as once again the competition level in all of the weekly divisions looks to be exceptional. The Modified class is expected to see some heavy competition this season as someone is looking to fill the void left behind defending Track Champion Jim Crawns off-season retirement.
Brian Weaver, the 2006 Track Champion is expected to return to competition along with 2005 Track Champion Mitch Gibbs. Gibbs is anticipated to compete in a majority of the action this season at the Point. Former Modified Track Champions Mike Colsten and Carl Nagel will also be primed for a shot to return to the podium at the season ending banquet. Last year a number of new faces made impacts on the Modified division. J.R. Hurlburt joined the weekly campaign after missing the first few weeks and managed to finish in the top ten in points. Chris Ostrowsky recorded his first Modified victory at the Point after a number of solid finishes in past years.
A young crop of drivers joined the Modified veterans in what was a strong mix last season. Ken Titus recorded a feature win in his rookie season and fellow rookie Jesse Kline wound up tied for fourth in the final point standings. Last season two rookies accounted for feature wins with a total of five first time Five Mile Point feature winners taking honors in the class.
This Saturday the historical quarter mile goes green on opening day for the 58th year in a row. The T3 358 Modified Series 40 lapper will see all of the top twin tier Modified stars doing wheel to wheel battle. Many of the western tier of New York drivers will be on hand to try and invade and take the opening day honors. With Woodhull speedway not running their Modified division on Saturday a big field of their top drivers are hoping to get the early point lead in the T3 traveling series point lead.
Race time is slated for 6 p.m. this Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. For more information please contact the Five Mile Point Speedway offices at (607) 775-5555 or log on to www.fivemilepointspeedway.net for more |
