BECHTELSVILLE, PA APRIL 20, 2008 … Past champion Terry Meitzler helped his car owners, Dennis and Joanne Bailey, celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway by winning the 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Modified feature. Brian Shuey was able to bring his Bob Fisher Chevy sponsored No.5x home first in the 20-lap Late Model feature for the second time this season and Josh Morrow took the top honors in the 15-lap Central PA Legends Cars feature race.
John Willman led the 29-car starting field for the 30-lap Modified feature to the green flag and set the pace for two laps before sophomore racer Mark Kratz put his No. M1 in front of the quickly changing field of chargers.
Kratz , Shawn Reimert and Terry Meitzler had a three car battle going on for the lead until the ninth circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval when an infield marker tire was knocked out on to the track bringing a caution.
On the restart veteran racer Shawn Reimert was able to charge to the front but his lead was short lived as Kutztown’s Meitzler took command on the 12th lap after starting in eighth spot.
Meitzler, Reimert and Kratz kept the battle going for several laps before Jeff Strunk, a six time past champion, was able to move into the top three after starting 14th. Noteworthy was the fact that Stewart Friesen had brought the No. 357 Norm Hansell entry into the top five after starting 17th.
At 25 laps Doug Manmiller brought out the caution as he came to a stop on the backstretch with mechanical problems.
On the restart Meitzler was again able to resume his position in front of the pack while Jeff Strunk applied pressure and Shawn Reimert held on to third place.
In the final five laps Stewart Friesen tried to make it a three way battle for the win but the past Modified champion, driving the Berks Products sponsored entry, was able to pass under the checkered flag first and earn his first win in three years.
Second spot went to Jeff Strunk (Mohnton) who put heavy pressure on Meitzler in the final couple laps but fell short of victory. Friesen (Niagara Falls, NY) came home third followed by six time Modified champion Craig VonDohren (Oley) and early leader Shawn Reimer (Oley).
Dean Stoudt got the 20-lap Late Model feature off to an exciting start doing a 360 spin in front of he field coming off the fourth turn as he led the field to the green flag. The resulting melee put Mike Kellner out of action early.
On the restart Dean Stoudt was able to lead the first lap but Brian Shuey, starting fourth, was quick to take over the top spot. On the second circuit of the “bullring oval” Shuey looked like a man on a mission as he put the Bob Fisher Chevy No. 5x in front of the field.
Once in front it was clearly Brian Shuey night as the Shoemakersville racer was able to lead all the remaining laps and pick up his second win of the season.
Rick Todorow (Quakertown) did all he could to make a race out of the 20-lapper but was forced to settle for a comfortable second place finish. Past champion Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) got a
big burst of energy in the final laps and tried to grab second but fell short settling for third. Randy Stoudt (Pottstown), another past champion, grabbed fourth coming from 18th. Four time champion Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) held on for fifth.
Randy Kissinger started on the pole in the 15-lap Legends feature but his lead was short lived as he dropped out before the first lap could be completed. Josh Morrow (Hamburg) took the lead and stayed there for the entire 15 laps to pick up the win. Second spot, closing at the finish, went to Paul Rochelle followed by Rodney Kistler (coming from 23rd starting spot), Pat McDermott and Frank Polimeda.
In qualifying events leading up to the three features wins went to John Willman, Kevin Hirthler, Sean Merkel, Duane Howard and Jon Kellner Jr. in the NASCAR Modifieds while the consolation victories went to Meme DeSantis, Jason Smythe and Tom Umbenhauer.
In Late Model qualifying the heats were won by Mike Kellner, Randy Stoudt and Brian Shuey. The Central PA Legends qualifiers went to Tom Mayberry, Frank Polimeda and Jason Rochelle.
The Cornerstone Auto Sales Hard Charger awards, worth $50 to each driver, went to Randy Stoudt in the Late Models as he gained 14 positions in the feature to finish 4th after starting 18th. In the NASCAR Modifieds the award went to Jason Hamilton going from 27th to finish 12th gaining 15 positions.
