Bobby Varin Wires Field For 34th Career Win at Fonda

New York Modified star Bobby Varin took advantage of a rare front row starting spot on Saturday to capture his 34th career win at the famous Fonda Fairgrounds on Saturday. Varin gained the pole starting nod by winning the first Modified heat. Varin took off at the start of event and quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field. Building up a lead of more than half a track to second place man Pat Ward, Varin's biggest concern was his quick catch of the slower traffic, for as lap-8 was recorded, the throttle-quick Varin was already putting a lap on the slower cars. Even though the caution was displayed for the first time with three laps to go, Varin was more than up to the task on this day as he cruised to victory. Pat Ward was second with his usual solid run and AJ Romano finished third. Defending track champion Matt DeLorenzo finished fourth and Alan Barker stayed in the hunt all day long to complete the top five.

Bobby Varin was behind the wheel of the Nancy & Jake Spraker owned 1J Bicknell Chassied/JPM Powered Big Block racer as he began his quest to earn a fourth Fonda title this year. Varin has claimed the Modified title at Fonda three times during his career. He captured his first Fonda Modified title in 2000, and earned back to back titles in 2005 and 2006. Last year Varin fell just 36-points shy in capturing another title, losing out to small block proponent Matt Delorenzo. Varin won five times during the 2007 Fonda season, a season which saw him rack-up two wins in large paying events at mid-season, and then had a couple of lower finishes that enabled DeLorenzo to forge ahead down the stretch. The points race win, coupled with the hopes of all good racing luck in 2008, will keep the talented Varin in the thick of the Modified points battle again this season. Fonda has enjoyed a solid history of great racing rivalries since the track opened and the Varin-DeLorenzo rivalry is definitely a throwback to the rich golden history of racing the Fonda track provides.

While Bobby Varin was enjoying the spoils of a well earned victory, his 16-year old son Danny suffered through the trials and tribulations of Modified racing. In only his second Big Block Start the talented youngster was racing for position on the bottom side of the raceway when disaster struck. A competitor racing on the top side of the raceway lost the handle of his race car and drove across the front end of the Magsarus racer, and collapsed the front end of the racer, rendering it unrepairable for the remainder of the evening's race card. It was truly a tough break for the rookie as the motor in his Charlie Tibbits owned racer is still not ready from the engine shop, and he wasn't able to test the equipment at the Utica Rome practice session last Sunday.

The Varin team will be back in action this coming Saturday night at Fonda, and the season opener at Utica Rome is slated for Sunday. Bobby Varin will be once again be handling the driving chores of the Dave Cruickshank owned signature numbered 00 at Utica Rome and the 17 year old Danny will be back in the Charles Tibbitts owned numbered 18, fitted with one of the Varin's 358 motors for his assault on the Modified division.

Bobby and Danny Varin would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for their strong support during the 2007 season and hope for continued support into the 2008 racing season. More updates will follow for the Varin Racing team efforts.
