BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 27, 2008 . . . Six time NASCAR Whelen All American Series Modified champion Craig VonDohren was able to bring his Mike Harvey owned No. 1c home first in the 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. Young Mike Kellner won the 20-lap Late Model feature for his first victory of the season and Nick Mady took the top prize in the 600 Modified feature that was shortened to 10-laps due to time constraints.
The 30-lap NASCAR Modified stock car feature race had 29 cars taking the green on the tight one-third-mile, banked clay oval with Todd Marburger leading the first lap. Don Norris Jr. quickly grabbed the lead on the second lap. A spin in the first turn on the second circuit by Shawn Reimert brought out the caution and bunched up the field.
At the 10 lap marker Norris, looking for his first career win, had a comfortable lead on the field. Marburger kept the leader in his sights while Ryan Beltz was third and VonDohren, who had started 15th, was now in fourth spot.
At 17 laps VonDohren, who calls Oley, PA home, was right on the rear bumper of leader Norris.
Norris got caught up behind a slower car and that gave VonDohren the top spot on the 21st circuit.
With five laps to go Kerry Kratz brought out the caution as he stopped in the second turn giving Norris the chance to close up behind VonDohren in the battle for the win.
In the final five laps VonDohren was able to hold off all challengers and take his 61st career win at the Berks County oval. Second spot went to Doug Manmiller (Shoemakersville) coming on strong in the closing laps after starting 14th. Kevin Hirthler (Bechtelsville) came from 12th to grab third while Jeff Strunk (Mohnton) charged from 18th to grab fourth. Rounding out the top five was Mike Gular (Green Lane) coming from 22nd starting position.
For more than half of the 20-lap Late Model feature Bryon Sipe looked like the man to beat after he survived a couple early race multi car accidents.
The early laps saw Sipe and veteran Jon Kellner Sr. battling for the top spot and Mike Kellner chasing along behind.
At the midway point Mike Kellner moved into second and closed up on Sipe.
With 14 laps in the record book young Kellner was able to charge to the front and that is where he stayed for the balance of the 20-lap main event. Second spot went to Sipe (Leesport) followed by Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale), Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Brian Shuey (Shoemakersville) coming from 18th to grab fifth.
Three flips slowed the pace for the 600 Modified feature race and caused it to be shortened to 10 laps with Nick Mady of Milford, PA able to come home the winner in a very close battle with second place finisher Mike Keppler. Third went to Eric Whitby followed by Kevin Gruber and Butch Getz.
Todd Marburger took the win in the first qualifying event for the Modifieds. The second qualifier was won by Ryan Beltz while the third and fourth qualifiers were won by Kevin Hirthler and Don Norris Jr. Consolation races went to Stewart Friesen and Mike Gular.
Late Model qualifiers were won by Bryon Sipe, Brian Shuey and Mike Kellner with Greg Hoffmaster win the consolation.
Qualifiers for the 600 Modifieds went to Eric Whitby, Mike Keppler and Chris Stockham while the consolation race was won by Butch Getz.
The Cornerstone Auto Sales Hard Charger awards, worth $50 to each driver, went to Mike Gular in the Modified feature coming from 22nd starting spot to finish 5th. Brian Shuey earned the award in the Late Model main event charging from 18th to finish 5th.
NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Late Models will return to action on Saturday, May 3rd at 7:30 p.m.. Legends stock cars will make it a tripleheader show making their second appearance of the season.
Checkered Flag Fan Club will be there to honor the feature winners. Fans are reminded to make note that 7:30 p.m. will be the starting time until the BPG Freedom 76 in September.
Admission for Saturday night is $13 for adults, $5 for youngsters 6 thru 11 and under 6 are admitted free with a paying adult. There is always free parking on the speedway grounds and fans are invited to enjoy the wide array of concessions available at the track or are free to bring their food and refreshments.
